Have to say, the PDLS+ lights are really effective in dark foggy conditions.

Fog driving
I had to switch to manual lights this morning. They did come on automatically for me (but then it was 5am!) but you have to be in manual mode to choose fog lights.

^^ this. Drive smoothlyIf the PSM/TCS/ESP/other acronym lights are flashing, you're driving beyond your and the cars safety envelope.
But the OP is right, Audi ESP is set up more for stability and safety.
