I would assume they are transferrable as they are attached to the car rather than the owner. Going by the fact that the BMW extended warranty was transferrable to the new owner when I sold my car.

The below statement is correct and if you already know you will be keeping the car beyond 3 years, it's a no brainer (IMHO) to buy the extended warranty prior to your car's first birthday.
