I have just looked at your spec and agree with this apart from dropping the 75-litre tank. I had not realised before you were adding 20 wheels and PASM to the base and having done that you are 1/2 way to an S. the roughly £2k more for an S will always be there in 2nd value

If you're planning to keep the car long-term, buy an S instead. By dropping some of the options, you'll end up with a similar price, and a better resale value ultimately, as well as a much nicer car to drive. For example, I'd find it hard to come to terms with paying £1440 extra just to change the stitching colour, and long-term the lighter coloured stitching may show signs of wear and tear more readily than standard stitching.

I had a Gen2 Base on loan for a couple of days last week. Compared with my Gen1 S, it felt as if it was working very hard indeed as soon as I tried to press on. The engine was revving frantically and the gearbox was working hard. The S is just so much more effortless. Fuel economy wasn't markedly different from my S. I also thought the steering on the Base was very slightly unstable directionally, but this might have been a problem with that specific car.

Just looked at your spec and really do think £63,000 plus another £2k for VED is making that a very expensive 2.0. Although I am getting a 2.0 my build was £53,500 ( at old price ) plus VED . If I had a budget of £63,000 I would definitely go for the S. I will be driving the 2.0 at Silverstone on Monday and will report back.

If I were you I'd get the S and that's coming from a poor 'base 2.0' model owner!

The 2.0 is a great car but does have a couple of downsides (it's all relative though!) which people have already mentioned and could possibly niggle at you I.e. lack of grunt at the top end - i miss, albeit not very often considering how busy the roads are , the 600 Nm of torque and 500bhp of the Audi RS4 I had. The 2.0 is quickish and does handle well with PASM but there are those moments when you just want more.

I also crave a more vocal and nicer soundtrack.

I can't comment on whether it is massively more fuel efficient as I don't know what I'd get from an S, but I have averaged around 27mpg overall.

Over 15 months and 7k miles, I've averaged just under 28mpg in a Gen 2 GTS (same engine and state of tune as the Gen 3 S) but I avoid using around town where possible.

Add that to a base and it's a case of "all mouth, no trousers" IMHO. :D

I'm sure mine would be alot better if I didn't commute into Manchester City centre! The traffic jams are awful and been made alot worse recently by the council closing roads off for cycle lanes which are rarely used and imposing one way systems....but don't get me started on that!

My 2020 S has averaged 26.7 mpg over 5000 miles during the 12 months I’ve had it, but a lot of these miles have been urban driving 🙁

I don’t think you will regret the base 2.0l. I picked up my Gen 3 Base a month ago and it has exceeded my expectations. I have had a string of 3.0l / 6 Cyl diesels and I don’t find the 2.0l Macan wanting at all. Sure the S is ‘quicker’ but in the real world that extra power is mostly wasted. As a daily driver I wanted something with reasonable mpg and I’ve seen many reports of the S getting less than 19mpg round town and in short runs. The 2.0l is 25 round town and over 30 on a longer run. As for being stuck behind traffic as Col Lamb seems to always quote, it’s simply not true - but then he is the biggest 2.0l Macan basher on here. The 265 bhp is honestly plenty.

I was lucky to pick up a showroom car with some upgrades such as tinted rear lights, black tail pipes, painted mid section and lower section bumpers and GT steering wheel and these all make the overall look so much better that if I ordered again I would certainly add them.

Also the car has 21 inch wheels and no pASM and I find the ride very very good - much better than previous BMWs. Interestingly I had a loan car last week which was a 2.0l on air suspension and I did not like the ride as much…..and I live in the Cotswolds where the roads are not the best!

Just my opinion but I think you will be fine.
