Very true. As for intervals, with Gen 2&3 cars oil is variable dictated by use while others are 20K or 2 years. Others can advise about Gen 1.

My previous Gen 1 ( 2l) needed an oil change after 12months, however quite a lot of driving was short trips.

Gen 1 was 2 years or 20,000 miles = whichever was the sooner.
