Hi,

I always plan up to 1 year in advance of buying a new car and I’m interested in a Macan for my next one.
Currently I drive an Arteon which looks great but I fancy a mid-size SUV with a bit more punch for my next car.
My budget will be around £38k, I’m thinking of something up to 5 years old with Lewisham mileage (30k).
Would you buy from a Porsche dealer, general garage or private?

Thanks
Nick

Welcome.

Depends upon year, an official extended Porsche Warranty is always a good idea with a Macan you have not owned from new

Hi and welcome. I see the dreaded spell checker has converted lowish into Lewisham.

In years gone bye you wouldn't have found five year old cars on an OPC (Official Porsche Centre) forecourt but post covid things have changed. A car bought from an OPC as "Approved Used" will come with a two year warranty. It's possible to buy the extended Porsche warranty even if you've bought the car from an independent. I'm not familiar with the hoops you have to jump through.

Thanks Col,
Ideally 2019 but may be limited 2018 due to the cost.

Thanks Peter,

I work in purchasing and always looking for the best deals, but am more than aware the cheapest isn’t always the best.

Hi Nick,

Welcome to our friendly forum! :)

I notice that some independent ‘prestige’ car dealers (not main dealers of Porsche etc) ask similar prices to main branded dealerships. As above, the Porsche used 2 year warranty is nice to have, as long as you’re not simply paying £2k to £3k more for a car, compared to a non-Porsche dealer.

Cheers,
Simon

Ha ha! I wondered about “Lewisham mileage”.

The computer also seems to have changed your ‘by’ to ‘bye’. ;) :P

There is an interesting chat going on within our regional PCGB What's App group. Local OPC labour ate is £280 per hour and the local independent rate £108 per hour. the local independent has fixed servicing quotes less than a third members have been paying at OPC.

Porsche extended warranty (not being a new car warranty referred to in overriding legislation) ties you to OPC servicing. An individual buying a Second hand Porsche needs to decide whether he wants to go down the insured route (for which many recognise the Official warranty is the best) or self insure (and possible buy non OPC) from an independent specialist. That may well depend the extent they could afford a large bill if their self insured experience turned out to be adverse.

Personally, I am in the official warranty route for at least next two and a half years. However, at the end of that period I may well decide to self insure , move to independent servicing. If I did I would gain greater freedom on tyre type I fit. A modern snow flake approved best suits the British climate but unfortunately Porsche have not given N type approval of any of that type for the Macan. Another possible factor effecting the decision is whether the car has air suspension or not. If so, the official route may be better value than not as Porsche does not differentiate in insured cost dependent on suspension type

For particular individuals, a decision re servicing and official warranty or not can also depend on the extent they have a convenient good independent available.

If you've got the time and flexibility (no PX) then I'd consider all options (OPC, indie and private). Buying privately can be as much of a headache as selling, but it's relatively easy to get inspections done - and so long as the car hasn't been modified then it's possible to get an official warranty.

To do that I think you have to pay to put it through Porsche's inspection process so there's always a danger that they'll determine that some work's required before they'll put the warranty on it. However if you've got yourself a relative bargain vs OPC sale price you could be well in.

Looks like the cars on the OPC site at your budget are just a bit too old vs your criteria eg 2017 / 40k+ kind of stuff, but this is a good time to be making offers.

Best of luck

Porsche used warranty does not tie you to OPC servicing. I won’t bore you with what I went through to confirm this but I have confirmation from Porsche GB that this is the case.
For a warranted claim to be denied they would have to prove that the service you had (from Indy) caused the failure directly.
