Thanks all for your input on my first post. My local dealership has taken my point onboard re why they do not fuel the car with the 98RON as this is recommended by Porsche for the Macan 2.0. I fully appreciate that 95RON will not cause engine damage and that the new Macan 'will' run on this lower spec unleaded fuel but with a slight effect on performance and fuel efficiency AND why this is noted as the 'alternative' in their handbook.
As the first full tank of fuel tends to be 'complementary' then I'm ok with this but I think dealerships should at least tell you they have fuelled the car with the alternative rather than the recommended higher octane fuel.
I will certainly try 98RON for my next fill up to see if there are any noticeable differences in performance and fuel efficiency.
Thanks again.
Robbie

Robbie, good call, fill 98 Octane as often as you can. 95 will not do any damage, unless it has undesirable additives, as specified above. Naturally, you will get best performance/efficiency out of 98 Oct fuel.

How it works, is: the engine is equipped with something called a “knock sensor” looking for unplanned detonations. When the undesirable detonation is sensed, the ignition timing is altered, until the knocking stops and it will be continuously adjusted for optimal performance. This is effectively managed by electronic witchcraft within the 91-98 RON range, but unfortunately the engine is not designed for running on jet fuel or cooking oil [emoji36]

I normally fill 98 Oct fuel, but now and then get the 95. It gives me great pleasure when I ride-out of the station with 98 in the tank, after depleting 95. I can feel the difference and it reminds me how sensitive and well engineered equipment I am riding [emoji41]

I’d need to drive 20 miles round trip to get 98 Ron. The only stations on my doorstep have 97 Ron. I’ve used that since 2015, unless in a rare instance I found myself in a shell garage then I put in v max. Don’t know why more petrol manufacturers don’t have 98+ Ron on their forecourts. So the situation for me is 97 or bust. Can’t honestly say I’ve ever noticed any discernible drop in power or lethargy. Might be an issue in my 911, but when you are running low on fuel what are you going to do?

I haven’t used 97 in my GTS Smithy, I normally use Shell V Power which is 99, but in the Alps a few months ago I was short and filled up with 95. It didn’t like it at all so I was glad to be filling up with the widely available 98 as soon as I could. I’d be hesitant to fill up with 97 if it was supermarket fuel though.

I tend to fill up at Shell stations when I’m out and about, in the course of my normal journeys. So not too often do I need to use alternative/lower RON fuel.

I have used 97 Ron Bp Ultimate in my GTS and other cars requiring 98 Ron for years.
BP don’t use ethanol which others use to bump theirs up to 98.

I doubt you could tell the difference.

It would be nice if everything was sold the same everywhere. One has more / better additives etc etc.

Jet fuel is just pink paraffin so not even suitable for a TVO Ferguson let alone any Porsche lol

It’s BP & Esso 97 Ron I regularly use. I’ve occasionally put in Tesco 99 Ron but heard many horror stories about supermarkets own brand fuel to worry me not to use it regularly.
20 mile round trip though. Really? As much as I’ll enjoy driving there & back I’ll wear a track in the road.

Like I said, Smithy, often no need to make a special 20 mile trip. Just top up with Shell V-Power Nitro-Plus 99 RON stuff whenever you pass a Shell garage going about your normal business. :) :geek:
