Thanks Nick. I’ve been to the Triumph and Ducati factories in the last few months and seen the bench tests on those bikes and as you say it’s a cold turnover then a fire up. No doubt tolerances much improved and reduced importance of run in over the years but I’m old school and will change at 1500 miles or so.

Although a biker I've not seen bikes being assembled but I have had the guided tour at Zuffenhausen in Stuttgart where, at that time, all Porsche petrol engines were being assembled.

I'm with you on running in, it's not 'old school'. Tolerances and quality control may have improved over the years but fundamentals of metals and machining have not, new components still need to bed in to each other for reliability, smoothness, optimum efficiency and reduced oil consumption. It could be argued that it's even more important now since improved lubrication technology actually inhibits the running in process to some extent.

There are many reasons that Porsche recommend a running in process for the whole vehicle, not just the engine. But we've run this debate here many times before, so please let's not start it all over again!

Cheers Nick. If you are near Hinckley I’d highly recommend the Triumph factory tour and exhibition if you have an interest in 2 wheels. I’m lucky to have another Porsche experience day for the Turbo and will drop in there again and the new exhibition at Silverstone when down from the frozen North.
