I've given all 3 variants a good test and think the 14 way gives you that extra lumber support without having to climb over the bolster in the 18 way.

I Agree and if you read old threads on the 18 way's the side bolsters take a bit of a hammering on entry and egress epsecially if you are a bit over your BMI.
