I don't feel the cold as much as some it seems, or just stay indoors in cold weather, but the map book lives down between the navigator's seat and centre console same as it has on all the previous cars.

Got sat nav and a phone that will let me navigate anywhere in the world. Haven’t had a printed map in a car for at least a decade.

Looking at a map can identify somewhere you want to navigate to that you didn't know existed before.

And route planning is far easier when you can see 'the big picture' on the printed page in front of you.

It's not surprising that the Millenials' dependence on electronic devices leads them to make errors. Apart from their woeful appreciation of geography and where north and south lie, they often have no idea of where their intended destination is. Thus you have instances like the well publicised case of a young ambulance crew who headed hundreds of miles in the wrong direction to a town of the same name as the one they were supposed to be going to, not far away!

Wow, it really sounds like you don’t like young people. Some pretty spectacular generalisation there. For reference I am not a millennial ( sadly not by a long shot ) but most of them I know tend to be way more sensible and non-judgemental than people my age. I haven’t used a map in years and also haven’t been lost in years. Even if I am on foot in London I’ll use my phone to navigate ( always successfully ) to where I need to be. I usually have a pretty good idea where I’m going and use the sat nav to validate my route rather than dictate it. Also never have the issue with the place I am aiming for being in the crease between 2 pages!

There are also plenty of documented cases of “older” people driving the wrong way on motorways, or following their sat navs onto train tracks or into lakes because they don’t know how to use them. An old boss of mine once had a meeting with myself and a client in Crawley, West Sussex and he ended up in Crawley, Hampshire. This pre-dated sat nav’s being common and he was in his 50’s. As with your example that was a comms issue rather than anything to do with reading a map. Extremely funny at the time though.

Btw it is possible to make the map view on the sat nav big enough to show the whole country so if you know how to use technology it really can be your friend and usually quite a lot more informative than a bunch of re-cycled trees ( which will get you points on your license if you try to use them whilst driving )

I have three millennial children, and I specialise in spectacular generalisation, also comedy. I also read the posts on here so I know very well how old you are, and a lot more things too!

And one more thing - I’m a fan of electronic devices and have contributed significant amounts to Tim Cook’s billions.

Btw, points are awarded for using hand held electronic devices while driving, not paper maps.

Points are awarded for eating whilst driving, reading a book ( or looking at a map ) will definitely win you prizes.

Btw, i probably should have said “ if one uses technology properly” rather than “if you”. Wasn’t meant to be a personal dig. I can use tech, but my typing and grammar is appalling! Something else you can add to the stuff I probably shouldn’t be posting on the tinterwebs.

Oh, blimey, I turn my back for a minute a ruckus breaks out! There's room for both and each to their own. Lets agree on that and leave it there.
