There’s normally only one or two boats going and they take a few days to do the return journey - plus the cars don’t necessarily go on in order. So it’s another variable. Two to four weeks from build is a good guide.....

Wow, that's surprising, I would have thought all that is simple logistics planning and management and would have been a 'well trodden path,' a path trodden by a 'well oiled machine' a well oiled German machine!

In my case,

1. Pay initial deposit
2. Receive invite to Porsche Experience Day at Silverstone. Go to Silverstone.
3. Confirm specification (often called 'lockdown').
4. (maybe) pay top up deposit, depending on OPC and spec. I didn't have to pay a top up deposit even though I had > £15K in options.
5. Wait
6. Car arrives
7. Pay balance
8. Pick up car
9. Repeat :-)

As above from the others and no top up fee for me either.
I would think top up deposit is possible if crazy spec or in uncertain times (Upcoming Brexit as an example).

You missed point 9
