That's only closing open apps.

If a 'power off' and restart doesn't do anything then go to Settings/Safari/Clear History and Website Data.

Worst case would be a full reset and restore from a backup.

Have cleared the history cache, plus done a reboot and it seems to have stopped the 'hanging' situation, fingers crossed? Still a bit slow, but that's the built in obsolescence at work, I guess?

Probably. You could go a bit further and try these steps:

But it may just be its age, as you say. If you don't want to splash out on a new one, iPad Air 2s are going on eBay for around £160. The Air 2 is still a very good iPad and will load the latest version of iOS.
