Apologies, this must have been covered already, but what is the first indication of an issue with a transfer box?

Mine’s going to be changed next week. First signs were occasional slips from inside rear wheel when leaving junctions, sometimes a slight shock or shuddder through the car. But the real test is to reverse on full lock, uphill preferably. At first this test may seem inconclusive but as the fault worsens you will be in no doubt. When the tech tested mine at the OPC he was gone barely five minutes before confirming the box is shot.

Nick, nothing there that I recognise thankfully! I raised the question because I THINK I can hear a very faint "hum" reminiscent of a worn wheel bearing although not while cornering where I'd expect a wheel bearing to complain. Probably nothing untoward although I've just clocked 19k and am sure the engine is quieter than ever so maybe it's normal but been drowned out before. Its booked in for an interim service and new brake pads on 25 August so will get checked out then. Thanks.

Is there another way?

Kwik Fit quoted £300 (Inc lifetime guarantee) and OPC £295 (not yet in writing) as it'll be in with wheels off for an interim service anyway. I'm not aware of any independent Porsche specialists in or near Sheffield (other VAG specialists though).

The service guy, on Friday, just said it would work out cheaper done at the same time as the service when I was discussing lack of need for an oil change and the cost of the pads, "wheels off" might have been my extrapolation of what was said. So far the written confirmation hasn't matterialsed despite me chasing today so I may yet look elsewhere for the lot, Hull isn't too far to travel, owned by Listers not JCT600.
