If the Gen 3 2.0 is slightly better than the Gen 2 then I don’t think I will be disappointed. Of all reviewers I really rate Janko Lind who had this to say about the Gen 2

Around town they are OK

Out on the open road they handle like any other bigger engined Macan as long as it has PASM and 20/21 inch wheels.

Now for the BUT, put your foot down and wait, wait and off it goes. Try to overtake anything and keep fingers crossed that you can make it.

Now try an S or better still a GTS and try the same routes as you did in the 2.0

You will then know which is better for you.

Fuel economy is not very different as a Macan is a pretty heavy car to move and especially to accelerate.

Last time I drove a 2.0 was Sept 2020 around the Lake District as mine was in for service. To say it was asthmatic is an understatement, driving up Dunmail Raise from Grasmere towards Thirlmere required a very heavy push of the gas and it laboured up the steep incline of the main road. On the open road there was not enough under the bonnet to overtake the slow drivers so I was stuck.

So if you are not bothered about performance then buy a 2.0, if you want performance to match the badge buy anything but a 2.0.

Hi Col.

Hope you’re keeping well. :)

I have to say that professional motoring journalists do not agree with you (e.g. the link posted earlier in this thread). ;)

Cheers,
Hi Simon

The gen 2 that I drive was better than the gen 1 that I drove prior but still imo it is not a true Porsche despite the badge. It required a very heavy right foot to make what progress it could, it required a lot of effort to drive it in a fashion other than Driving Miss Daisy.

A Porsche is about superb handling and an effortless engine.

Remember the gen 1 base 2.0 Macan that I first drove was out accelerated from rest by a BMW118D and a VW Passat Bluemotion from 50 > 70 mph.

Hardly a performance car worthy of the marque if it could not keep pace with run of the mill cars.

I have the 2.0 base Macan gen 2 and love it. However, I always drive it in sports mode. I would say it accelerates quickly enough and overtaking isn't an issue either.

I can understand in normal mode, it can be slow and lumpy, hence why I don't drive it in that mode.

I've also had the Macan turbo as a loan car several months ago and again I only drove that in sports mode, as I felt it wasn't that great in normal mode (even a little sluggish dare I say).

I had an order for the Gen 3 base and changed it to the S after the launch. I test drove the Gen 2 base, S and GTS, And was happy with the base’s performance. Around town and even on the highway its fine and keeps up with a GLC 300, X3 and XC60 if your cross shopping. It definately feels lighter around town than the S and GTS. What made me switch to the S was the change to the 2.9 l V6 on the 2022. Having driven it in the Gen 2 GTS, its a beaut, not just the smoother power delivery, but also aurily it just sounds like the real thing. My car would be a keeper, and I knew I would have a smile on my face every time I start that V6. I suggest driving a New S or Gen 2 GTS and than compare. The head said 2 litre, the heart v6.

It depends on what’s important in a car. If it’s looks or handling the 2 litre will be the same as the 3 litre. The 3 litre will be faster and makes a sound which most find more exciting. I put my money on the 3 litre and have to say that 1+ year later every journey is special – the engine is brilliant – from the point of view of refinement, torque and power, and sound. Fuel economy is a relatively small cost in the overall context but the 3 litre will be worse although probably not much. Mine is only used for longish journeys as we have another car for running around and it delivers 30+ mpg consistently. To my way of thinking the £5k difference is much better spent on the engine than on flippery such as pan roof, leather upgrades and fancy wheels. You’ll get the majority of it back come resale time.

Hard to comment engine wise until I get test drives in each one in next few months. Forum comments on 2.0l must’ve been based on previous 237, 245 or 252bhp iterations + 3.0l S now more like previous GTS! Who knows, maybe base with 265bhp will be fast enough for some doubters now🤔

So, in addition to larger price gap, both 2.0l & 3.0S now more powerful than before + options like 18” wheels, PASM etc not available on base + stuck with coloured callipers & 20” wheels now on S etc make it a whole new ball game re performance and looks/options etc which needs a drive in each and a good study of what options are important before coming to a decision👍

Should be a fun time making a decision but……will keeping my SD still come out as best option🤔

Yes, the Gen 3’s will certainly have to be impressive to drag me out of my SD gasgas1👍
