No ICE Macan from Week 16 next year?

I’ve had a number of requests for source information since I posted this comment yesterday.
“Learned today that the ICE Macan will not be available to the UK from Week16 next year?” So just to answer all here you go.

*What /who was the source? Information came directly from my OPC’s SM and RM

*Week 16 orders or deliveries? Last order input week, assume this has to be based on actual allocated slots i.e. no slot no order

*Why the (?) on the statement? This information had only just been received internally and they themselves were a little surprised

Just for clarification, I have already got an order in and have known my OPC and the team there for many years, so not in any way some tactic. I asked if this was the end of ICE Macan everywhere, they didn’t know but confirmed they understood it was for UK.

So until you see it in a formal statement, don’t just take my word, go ask now.

Very true.
It wouldn't be difficult for them to backtrack and 'extend' the cut off date though and I suspect that may be looked at in line with sales demand for ICE vs EV

If true, it really does seem strange to terminate their best selling product when they are still manufacturing it for other markets. What could be the reason for this?

Could it be EV quotas forcing them to reduce and prioritize their ICE sales? Has this decision been forced on them by the failure to sell enough Taycans, and (presumably) also revising down their forecasts for Macan EV sales? Maybe they also have to prioritize the markets where they will offer a wider range of ICE vehicles, and UK doesn’t make the cut due to Brexit tariffs and stuff - so essentially they sell EVs in the UK to enable them to produce more ICEs for Germany and meet their quotas that way?

I’m certainly glad my Macan S just got shipped from the factory, if there won’t be many more.

It might be a right-hand-drive issue and related to factory capacity for the new model? And an EV Macan will initially sell like hot cakes and with a high margin too (which will please the bean counters).

So, thinking about this, I’m sure it is a quota issue. Starting January 2024 car manufacturers are required to have at least 22% of their UK car sales be zero-emission cars (and full EVs are deemed to be zero emission). If they miss the quota then they are fined £15,000 per car. Then the quota increases each year up to 80% zero-emission cars in 2030 and 100% in 2035.

So, if the Taycan is not selling zillions, and the Macan EV doesn’t either, there’s no way they could meet UK demand for the Macan any more. And I suspect the margin on the Macan isn’t enough for Porsche to just pay a £15,000 fine for each one they sell.

Different quota rules apply in other countries. Although Sunak just pushed back the 100% EV date to 2035, the 2024 22% quota was confirmed, unchanged.

It has to be that, doesn’t it? And what else could Porsche do in the UK but withdraw the Macan so they can still sell some higher margin ICE cars.

I think this also brings home to me that ICE cars are going to become difficult to order quite soon, and well before the 2035 deadline. If people aren’t embracing EV cars then you won’t get a production slot for an ICE car without a fight,
