Good write up, recognise some of the failings and agree with all of the great positives for the car. I'm short and set the boot lower to keep me drier under it and yes the water stays outside if there is not a gale blowing. Must try the Sonax have corrosion issue on mine also.

I have reduced the opening height of the tailgate, easy to do, see the owners handbook, and it now opens to a height where I can still easily walk under and I am just under 6' tall.
