MACAN DPF PROBLEMS
What a forum!
DPF lights turn into a debate on distillation towers! Fantastic!
(Oh, and the lighter stuff comes off first; ie petrol just after jet fuel and diesel just after kerosene and stove oil, but before asphalt)

just to (try and) get it back on track.....some also advocate never letting the Macan fuel tank drop below 1/4 full.
What's the reason for that one regarding the dpf?

The system won’t start the active regeneration cycle if it senses it may not complete prior to running out of fuel.....(mind you, 20 mins for 1/4 tank probably means under 20 mpg or so for diesel so a bit pessimistic)

Thank God, we're all right!Ray G wrote: ↑Sat Jan 12, 2019 7:48 pmWithout wishing to be pedantic there really is a distillation tower. The crude oil is heated on the way in and for every barrel processed the various fractions of that barrel come off at the same time, with the lights products coming off the top of the tower and the heaviest at the bottom and the other fractions in the middle.VanB wrote: ↑Sat Jan 12, 2019 6:46 pmNickNuclear Nick wrote:Col is right. The process starts at the bottom of the tower with crude oil. Diesel comes off lower than petrol, therefore 'earlier' in the process. The more volatile, the higher up the tower, therefore 'later'.
Thank you but a simplistic view of the distillation of fractions from any source. Without being too much of a geek and in simple terms the more volatile a fraction the earlier it comes off in the distillation process. The concept of a distillation “tower” is to explain the level at which a distillate comes off. The higher up the tower the earlier it comes off in the process.
FYI my degree is in chemical engineering so I’m pretty sure that I am right!

Supply and demand old chap. After Gordon Brown decided to go slightly Green on the advise of lord knows who, he introduced banding by CO2 for Company Car drivers who ,I guess, used more fuel than J.Public. Therefore, the UK when mad for Diesel and, as mentioned elsewhere, central heating oil demand in winter hikes the price. Whether that is blatant profiteering, that is what happens. I don't recall such a big gap in price though. Ten pence a litre around here.Col Lamb wrote: ↑Sat Jan 12, 2019 2:53 pmI do not see it the same way.Cheshire Cat wrote: ↑Sat Jan 12, 2019 12:22 pm If my memory serves be correctly, Diesel and Petrol (Gasoline) are produced in the same process of distillation of crude oil so you get both for the same costs. Then the fuel is further refined and additives introduced but , as mentioned above, taxes are the main cost of fuel.
Yes, both are produced by the same process with Diesel being extracted from the process earlier than petrol.
So petrol has to undergo more processing and this processing has to include additional costs which at the very least is extra production plant, maintenance, replacement parts, design, build, taxable rates etc.
Those costs may not be reflected in figures we see that are released but they are there never the less.
The bean counters at the Refineries will have the precise costs per ml produced in their calculations that is for sure.

Sorry for late response. I’m not entirely sure if it was given a software update at it’s service however following it the car lacks a little of it’s usual punch. I should make a call tbf to find out. Every day i look at other cars and i still wouldn’t change it! Well maybe a 911 .. one day

I don’t think they do the latest DME software update unless the customer has complained about dpf issues.FranCK wrote: ↑Tue Jan 22, 2019 3:43 pm Sorry for late response. Since the so called final " fix" software update last November we are so far hassle free. What I have noticed now though is first gear if you are not putting your foot down at all . Is so short its hardly worth having, it changes so quickly it more like a stutter than a gear change.
