Am I right in thinking that you are not obliged to have the update?

I am pretty sure you do not have to have it done. Certainly VW and Audi have not had to and you can opt out as it is not a safety update.
Always worth checking and i would personally decline it currently after reading some more. Not that i have a diesel.

Because its an update it will normally be done automatically at your next workshop visit (often without you even knowing.) You would need to specifically request it not be done......in this particular instance you'd probably have good grounds and not too much resistance at service reception.
Can you check the version before taking it in so at least you know the current software version and can check to be sure?
Not sure if this is accessible or if only via OBD port?

Only via the dealership - they will check all updates available a day or so prior to the car coming in will apply them regardless.
The dpf update thingy is a little different (I think) as owners were written to? (Others can confirm?)

I would not have the DME software upgrade carried out. Have e mailed OPC to ask them to pass on my complaint to Porsche customer services and also asked them to reinstall the original software as I take the view that the revised software is not fit for purpose.

Mark,
For the avoidance of doubt, is it the 'Re-program DME control unit - campaign number WG22' that I should ask NOT to have done? You mentioned this in an earlier post, but I just want to be sure.

Yes that's the one that was carried out on my car. I'm sure that the software has been tinkered with to capture more particles in the DPF and also increase adblue use in cold weather. As a result of the software changes I think that the car needs to be put through a regen of the filter more often than before as more particles are being trappped in the filter.

DPF problems seem to be a bit of a lottery. I have had my car over two years, 20,000 miles, lots of small journeys. Updated in mid-May. Never had an error message before or after the update. I think there is more to it than the latest software update. All seems very odd. I would insist the OPC starts changing bits if/when it happens to mine.

Yes it all seems a bit odd. Never had any dpf warnings in the 17000 miles and 2 years before the update and now getting them every 2 to 3 weeks
