I know it's been said many times before but unless you are a high mileage driver fuel costs are a small proportion of the costs of ownership. I do about 9000 miles a year and reckon I will spend about £1000 a year more on fuel than I did with my previous 330d

Not reluctant at all. The question has been answered. No need to add to what has been said. Few of us bought a 3ltr V6 petrol for fuel economy, unless they had their brain lobotomised ;) . I came froma diesel and knew what I was doing. Within a generation will all be fondly remembering petrol stations and mpg. I am just not ready for Hydrogen tank volumes and super cooled batteries.... Clearly all said in jest

Yep, definitely heavier, I just thought that the economy would be about the same, not significantly lower (my M3 averaged 24). As I've also driven the Macan more sensibly I thought this was would have helped. That said, I do lots of short journeys and when I went for a long motorway drive recently the range got up to about 450 miles, so over a long journey at sensible speeds it would be a lot more economical. But obviously that's not what why we buy these types of cars.

Overall I don't really care about the economy, I just want to enjoy driving cars, I just imagined that almost 100 less bhp would balance out against an extra half ton.

I'm of the opinion that any MPG/Range improvements shown by coasting mode is optimistic (although it's great for showing people who economical your car is and justifying why you bought it). It might be an idea to reset your odometer when you fill up - that'll give you a better indication of range.

Then again, short journeys and the occasional heavy right foot will impact this.

Managed 27 on a recent trip to Belgium and most recent fill up was 18.1 but this was 80% stop start town driving. Blended average over 5,600 miles is c 22 but as I am only likely to do 8-9000 miles a year I'm not too concerned. It is, however, lower than I expected when I bought the car.

Agree my Petrol S gets combined 22mpg and is less than I had anticipated. But, I do low mileage.

Slightly off topic here... but my SD doesn't do as many mpg as I had imagined it would either. The trip thing repeatedly shows 35 or a bit less but when I fill up, it works out at 30-32. I suppose I drive through town and there is a fair bit of stop/start. With a heavy car, that knocks a hole in your fuel consumption. I did get >40 today on some longer runs, but will see how real that is next time I fill up! If I had a GTS, I imagine I would be getting <20.

I get over 40mpg on the trip computer on my SD pretty much every journey. Then again, I'm middle aged and my heavy footed days are mostly behind me.

Mostly, but not entirely...

calculated average over 8000 miles in my first SD was 36, just clicked 9000 miles in my GTS and the average is 24.......don't forget these things do weigh 2 tons (more with a sun-roof😉) which is a lot to get moving from standstill every time

Interested to know how you are defining middle aged...
