It may be right but does it sound pretentious?

I have to admit to failing to understand why it should sound pretentious to pronounce Porsche correctly. It is simply embarrassment? Does Porsche still evoke that iffy image of get-rich city traders?

We wouldn't think of pronouncing SEAT seet or Renault ren-alt and does anyone fail to pronounce the final syllable of Mercedes or have a debate about how to say Lamborghini.

So what exactly does it say about how we perceive ourselves or how we are perceived by others for our relationship with a brand if we believe ourselves to pretentious cocks for simply pronouncing a word correctly?

In my circles it's Porsch. As for the model? It's like the surname McCann. But then again I'm from Norn Iron.

Or what about
odd ee (audi) as opposed to ow dee
ren-olt (renault) (With the T stressed)
pyew joe (Peugeot)
Alfa Romeo (with the Romeo bit pronounced in the Shakespearian style) as opposed to Rome ayoo.
Sit Rinn (Citroen) not the three syllable format
hi un die (Hyundai) I'm not even sure how this is spoken in Korea?

Apparently the Nissan Almera was so named because it was pronounced the same in every language.

Surely the Nissan Almera must go down as one of the blandest cars of all time.

That's quite a science and which many a company has failed of. Talk about things being lost in translation - even within the U.K.

Here’s a case in point .......

The Silver Shadow was originally intended to be called the Silver Mist until someone at Crewe, where the car was produced, politely pointed out that in German, the word “mist” means “manure” and other things, some quite extreme, like it.

Realising what a disastrous effect such an association would have on the model’s fortunes, the bosses at Rolls-Royce decided to call their new car the Silver Shadow, instead. It was a wise move and the Shadow remains the car maker’s most successful model with sales of more than 25,000.

Many years ago Tetrosyl who make car polish, T-Cut and spray paints decide to develop a hand cleaner to compete with Swarfega. The name chosen was Dabs. It was researched and launched never ever realising that the name was Scottish/Glaswegian slang for a women's period!

And on a different note I was interested yesterday to note that Vettel was pegging Hamilton.
