Tyre noise

My Turbo is currently having its winters fitted. When they went on for the first time last winter I noticed that they were quieter than the summers on the motorway on the trip home. I put that down, at least in part, to the softer rubber of the winters. But I was a little surprised, given the chunkier tread pattern. Both sets are 20", the summers are Michies, the winters Dunlop.

Any one else think the tyre noise on 21's is too high, I love the look of the wheels [sport classic] and on a smooth road the cars is virtually silent at any speed, but on certain tarmac and concrete roads it really is intrusive, need the music on the mask the noise!
I have done 20,000 miles on them and wonder if they get noisier when the tread is less? when I come to replace them my main concern will be quieter tyres, I understand Pirelli have designed some but don't know much more?

It's another case of bling choices having downsides that people don't appreciate when ticking the boxes. It's well known that 21's are noisier, give a harsher ride and are more subject to damage due to potholes than tyres with greater sidewalls. The wheels are more prone to damage too. The perceived handling improvement is irrelevant for road use. But the fact so many will pay large sums of money for large wheels demonstrates the power of bling.

When you replace your tyres you will still be limited to those approved by Porsche if you stick with NO rated, but taking a risk if you choose not to when it comes to selling the car. The insurers might take a dim view as well, in the event of an accident claim.

When I bought mine, I tested 19's, 20's and 21's and felt the larger wheels/tyres were too noisy for me. I had also found with my previous car that Goodyear tyres were particularly quiet so I was pleased when my Macan turned up with Goodyear.

However, I will be due a new set within the next twelve months and am a bit concerned that Goodyear don't seem to offer a set of all-season, N rated tyres in the UK. I may be faced with a choice of Goodyear summer tyres or some other brand a/s. If that were the case, I would probably choose Goodyear summer tyres. However, I would then be afraid of getting stuck in the snow, mainly due to the embarrassment!

Of course not, , I wanted the extra width of tyre for traction and safety!

So with tyre widths of 275 and 315, my car should be really, really safe, with bags of traction!
