My new Macan is about a month away, so I'm starting to look at possible insurance products. I'm usually tempted to self-insure unless it's compulsory, and I'm fairly careful with my cars. Also, my car will have surround view cameras so hopefully I can avoid kerbing it. But I'd be interested to hear if people who've had wheel/tyre insurance reckon they've got their money back.

I have my Tyre and wheel insurance from OPC at £399 for 3 years with an excellent policy.
At that cost it was a no brainier but to be honest I hope I’d not have to use it and so far so good.

I also have surround cams and it does make it a lot easier but to be honest I was more interested in the tyre cover as 1 tyre is just over £300.

The best policy I would advise is a 3 or 5 year gap policy. Usually OPC don’t offer at good prices or even a decent claim policy. Again hope never have to use it but if you do then this will be worth the most by far. I have a 5 year policy allowing transfer to another car or refund if I want to cancel early so it’s a no brainier. 5 year policy at todays prices 😊

Depending on your OPC will depend on what they offer.

I tried everywhere to get wheel insurance for my 21" turbo wheels with no joy. As they're diamond cut most won't touch them

I know a few of the OPC's will cover them but Hatfield won't. I wish I had as I scuffed the NSR on that ridiculous spiral ramp at the Harlequin Centre in Watford. Won't be using that bastard place again. It's so narrow I've no clue how the Q7's of this world get up it.

Definetly worth it, have 21" turbos not damaged any wheels but took out 3 tyres so certainly had my money back. Probably won't be offered to renew it 😳

I paid £500 for a 3 year Wheel & Tyre policy with my OPC for my 21” Turbo wheels not had to use it yet thankfully but I believe it is worth it as you only really need one claim to pay for itself to me it’s like any insurance you hope you never need it but are thankful if you do

If you get enough answers to your survey, then surely the answer has to be 'no'!

My advice, stick with 'self-insurance' and continue to be careful, unless you are prepared to pay for 'peace of mind' ;)

Like Guy, I self insure......taking my last 2 Macans....24 months 25000 miles I’ve paid £15 for a puncture repair.

The 3 years prior to that in a Yeti over 40000 miles.....nil cost.

Same period (5 years) but only 25000 miles, Mrs P has had 2 wheel refurbs @ £75 each

Like most insurance....expensive if you never have to use it, but good value if / when you do.

Andreas, I don't take it out and look at it as £399 to spend on repairs and punctures. If after 3 years you haven't spent £399 you're a winner.

I damaged a rear wheel cost me £35 to repair. I use the same guy that JCT use. He came to my house and sorted it.
£364 left.

He told me jCT call it a smart repair and charge a bout £100 for it.

Regarding punctures Porsche give you the line that Z rated tyres can't be repaired. They can as long as the puncture is not on the shoulder or side wall of the tyre.

A local tyre fitter can repair a puncture for £15 - £20.

All insurance is stacked in favour of the insurance company, a bit like the odds are stacked in favour of the house at the casino ;)

If you can afford to pay for an 'event' (e.g. tyre repair, wheel refurb, new tyre etc) then the odds are that you will come out a winner, by not paying for insurance.

Obviously, those who make a sizeable claim (more than they have paid in premiums) are 'winners' but these will always be in the minority (otherwise the insurance company would go bust). :)

Comes down to one's attitude to risk. Looks like Paul, Guy, SP61GHT and I are gamblers.
