And yes, they are all superb cars, each in their own way. I don't agree with those who maintain there is a 'sweet spot' in the range.
There is... it's just completely different for each owner. Wouldn't bother with a range otherwise.
Exactly my point.

The bit I don't get is why the SD doesn't have the same outputs as the (old) SQ5, which I believe, is the same engine?

It isn't the same engine.

That was the BiTDi engine with much bigger torque / power outputs and was an enhanced version of the 'cooking' 3 litre Audi engine used in various models, including the Macan diesel.

I believe it actually is the same 3 ltr lump but with added turbochargers which Porsche could easily do but would cannibalise sales of the S/GTS

That was my understanding - the extra oomph coupled to the better dynamics of the Porsche over the Audi, could've made the SD a real show stopper (good as it is already, of course)?

...on the other hand a 'lazy' diesel should be good for 500km with no attention. (did I just call my car lazy :P )

.. ohh so long as you don't let the exhaust fill with coke over that time :!:

Be interesting to see whether or not the facelift offers anything of interest to those who prefer the diesel option, eg increased power or eg a GTD-type package that would help preserve some of the value of items on the options list - this might help to support sales of the diesel in the future.

Likely the only reason Porsche have a diesel Macan is to handle the EU rules about CO2 emissions across the range and ensure they sell enough to remain profitable.

The main type of customer they think will be interested in SD won't be overly worried about having the extra power of a twin turbo version, they would have more likely gone for the Q5/X4 with similar power outputs to SD, or even the 2ltr D versions. So they will be pushing those who want more power into the S petrol/GTS, that will mean more people buying the petrol variants making them more cost effective in Macan and other vehicles as higher volumes of sales - they will know a few won't be happy and go for other makes, but economically it is probably Porsche's best option - yes they could probably build a better SD, but they likely feel it won't be that that good for the company.
