It really is that simple. Another thing to bear in mind is that winter tyres need a minimum of around 4 mm tread to give maximum grip in the worst conditions. They are not tyres you should really consider wearing down to the legal minimum. But I find a set will get you through several winters with ease and you get more efficient wear on both your summer and winter sets.
A novice question ..... how important (if at all) is it to have a winter wheel and tyre set versus just changing tyres on the same rims? .... assuming winter tyres available for those size wheels?

And is it acceptable to take this route. ie. are participating OPCs willing to store tyres only and refit and rebalance them as and when, as it seems to me like a lot more work compared to just swapping wheels. And not without its inherent dangers.

Not important to have a second set of wheels, just more convenient and less chance of rim damage by a clumsy tyre fitter. But if you happen to have a blingy set of say 22" rims with a hard to clean pattern then it makes sense to have a cheaper, higher profile set of winter rims with a simple pattern that you can easily keep clean. For example I had these on my 911:-

Mike, I will be making enquiries, but on a commercial basis, OPCs are far more likely to offer free storage and changeovers if you've invested in a wheels/tyres set, rather than merely bought four tyres. And the tyres alone will take up as much storage space for them as would wheels with tyres. And as you say, more work involved with changing tyres, with more risk of damaging wheels and/or tyres. :geek:

Given how frequently you change cars! Perhaps buy a set of 20" winter tyres from a reputable tyre dealer in your chosen brand. When you trade it, let them change back to summer tyres when your trade it in spring 2020. You can then always sell the winter tyres on flEbay with just one winter's use. ;)

If it’s anything like Formula 1, they can change your 4 wheels in 10 seconds but changing tyres is going to take a fair bit longer! Must be a market for a “drive through”

Famous last words, but I'm hoping to keep Porsche Number Four for a decent period of time... ;)
