What was it Davis said when the EU guy said about putting extra tariffs in place ........ for every £1 tariff the EU puts on we will put £1 on their goods, I think we will make more profit than they will.

Or something to that effect

Porsche Directors talking sense. Regardless of what you think about the UK leaving the EU, punishing the UK in this way is basically a strategy for a 'lose- lose' situation.

If Porsche are nervous what about VW/Audi and BMW? Loss of the UK markets would surely have a significant impact not just on those companies but the German economy as a whole.

I’m not sure what we import from the different countries within the EU, but no doubt each industry that would be heavily impacted by tariffs will be lobbying furiously. The problem is if they, say, try placate the car industry then what about other industries? The whole thing is such a mess.

It’s about time Europe realised that they don’t hold all the trump cards. Look around, how many cars on our roads were made in mainland Europe, how many white goods in your home were built in mainland Europe, we import far more manufactured goods from Europe than we export to them, we don’t make much in this country any more. We really don’t want to get in a tit for tat trade war, both of us will lose. Both sides need to leave their egos at the door and realise that we have mainly got on for the past 50 odd years and each prospered from the relationship, but now we wish to go our separate ways but remain friends and trading partners

EU businesses that have significant trade with the UK, including car makers, want the same as most businesses here - as little change as possible to trading arrangements. Common sense.

But for the leaders of the EU institutions, giving the UK a 'good' Brexit sends an undesirable message to other member states at a time when anti-EU sentiment is rising among several of them. Its all about keeping the project on track, so the outcome for the UK has to look less good than the status quo ante. Not common sense.

Life would be simpler, and better, without empire-building politicians.
