Hi,
I know much has been written about insurance companies making you go to approved windscreen repairers rather than main dealer. My windscreen has cracked the whole way across at eye level. On contacting my insurance I have been made to go to Autoglass for replacement.

To my surprise they will include re-calibration of LDW cameras etc for my £75 excess. However, their earliest appointment is a whole month away due to the specialist glass of the Macan. I am a bit miffed that I have comprehensive insurance, Porsche assistance etc but still have a car that technically is illegal to drive for the next month as you do not get any sort of replacement vehicle for glass damage.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Rob

Ask your insurer to get it done at an OPC?

When I got mine done, I asked the cost if I were to pay (I thought that by getting comparative quotes I would be more likely to be able to get it done at the OPC). National windscreens quoted more than the OPC to get it done. It was of course covered on insurance. Perhaps if you get a quote from your OPC you will be able to persuade your insurer to let you go there. Into the bargain, I had a Panamera loan car for the day - you won't get that with Autoglass. Cost last year was £1173.16 at Tewkesbury.

Yes AutoAss do calibration. Has to be done in a controlled environment and had no centre within 30 miles of me. So had it done at OPC. Sorry for the shortage of screens, probably my fault as I'm not achieving 4000miles/screen. An that's not including the Cayenne loaners' screen (which cost me £500 excess)...why I cant have the loaner on my insurance I don't know.

Had to replace the screen twice in 6 months on my Macan. The glass seems to be quite delicate as have only ever had to replace a windscreen once before (bird strike) in 35 years of motoring.

Just out of interest, are you guys getting Porsche branded windscreens from your insurance companies or just getting the windscreen from the insurance approved supplier e.g auto glass

Thanks

I was informed that the Autoglass/Admiral policy was OEM glass for cars within their first three years then third party for older.

Ok that’s interesting thanks. I am with Admiral and the car is just 2 years old

Stone hit us yesterday and created a small chip but also a crack about a centimetre long right in the drivers line of vision

Will give them a call today

Thanks

Is there a bit of a pattern emerging here?

The main reason is the poor state of maintenance of our roads, coupled with the use of chippings by cheapskate councils and government to resurface worn out surfaces. And then there's the use of grit during the winter, some of which can be quite sizeable. As a result there are millions of loose stones out there now ready to be turned into missiles by vehicles in front or passing in the opposite direction.

There is a limit to what you can do to minimise the risk but obviously the higher your speed or the closer you follow other vehicles the more likely you are to become a victim.

Totally agree, at least the stones are hitting the windscreen rather than the bodywork. It is frustrating given I have done 80k miles in my golf over 10 years and it has one stone chip on the windscreen and the Macan has 16k miles over 2 years and has two large chips and one on the bonnet 😡
