'Pine'ing' for a 991.2 - aahhhh

Post by mcnallys » Sun Jun 10, 2018 9:01 pm

Well All,

It has happened the customary 2 year itch - thoughts on changing my car is upon me. Audi S3 Saloon is a great car, very practical and goes like a rocket, great for kids having 4 seats, boot, etc. Could go with a nice cayman, better priced - but extra seats for small children when need arrives

Option 1 - Keep S3 and change Macan GTS up to Cayenne / Q8 / something of that ilk - maybe even a new model RS6 Avant when it hits.
Option 2 - Do nothing for 1-1.5 years
Option 3 - Get S3 through MOT end of the year, new tyres, sell privately and then look for a used (low miles) 991.2 - really not sure what model!
Option 4 - do nothing for 3 years (save and order new 992.x)

Option 2 is head as when 992 drops, will 991.2 lose a little value and will people change to a 992 and there be a good selection of excellent 991.2's on the market?

When is 992 actually due for release - does anyone know?

All depends how important it is to have a car that the kids can go in. You kinda discount a Cayman due to being two seater but there really isn't any room in the back of a 911 either so effectively it's a two seater as well.

Also unless space is at a premium I can't see a lot of sense going from Macan to Cayenne.

Is the facelift Macan an option although if you want to go for a GTS again it could be a bit of a wait.

New RS4 look good although maybe not spectacularly different to a normal A4 Avant.
Merc C63 sound pretty awesome and would give you a whole new interior to play with.

I think that there will be a lot of used 911.2s and caymans on the market at the back end of next year as the new 992 will be in full swing and people will be trading in. That is on top of the second half of 2018 where there are no new Porsche vehicles available in the main. You have two lovely vehicles, be patient. That is what I am hoping for anyway

Interesting dilemma, this is my take.

The question is - do you want a 991.2 for sure? If so then maybe wait and look at the 992 as it will have a similar sort of turbo charged engine albeit with a bhp upgrade e.g. base likely to have 390 and S probably 450.

Have you considered 991.1 GTS - last of the NA GTS models and one that will probably hold very well.

I recently went back to a NA car when I got by GT3 and realise the differences now. I've had 991.1 C4GTS and 991.2 C4GTS - both awesome cars and the Gen 2 does feel marginally quicker - however, the free revving NA engine with its top end scream is pretty awesome and I now have an amplified version of that in the GT3.

As MCDK says - I wouldn't discount a Cayman, as you always have the Macan to do the family stuff.

i think be patient is the best approach - which gives time to full review of a 992. Also couldn’t justify a facelift macan to replace the GTS, can’t see how much better it would be unless i go a well specced turbo! the 70th weekend festivities does entice these thoughts, spotted two lovely 991.2 gts and about 6 GT3’s amongst many other lovely machines.

Mcnallys
Looks like the new 911/992 will be showing at the Los Angeles motor show in November, for what little information is coming out of Porsche it seems that at launch the Carrera and Carrera S will be the first models that you will be able to order probably Jan/Feb 2019 for delivery middle of the year ,presently there aren’t many Approved around that suit us because people are holding on to what they have with no new ones coming through,I’ve put a £5k deposit down at Sheffield OPC ,depends on the new price which we go for either a well specced up Carrera or a not so well specced up Carrera S somewhere in the region of
£95/£100k,there should be some nice 911/991 . 2 about once the new model has been coming through for a few months but I really fancy the new 992.
Personally I’d wait and see what the new 911/992 is like, spec and price before making a decision.

Word is that the announcement will be later in the year but everyone I know whose opinion I trust seems unable to commit to a date. I reckon the LA Auto Show in Nov/Dec is when you'll see the production car.

I think it comes down to two priorities - do you want the latest with all that entails or do you want driving pleasure?

Unless there is something fundamentally wrong with the S3, I would keep it for the time being due to the factory shut down, new model and so forth. I suspect as ever, demand for the 992 will have it on extended lead times for the first six months.

Changing to a Cayenne / Q8 is like going from a light aircraft to an Airbus. They are huge and they don't fit well into parking bays or small spaces - I had a loaner of the new Cayenne at the beginning of the month, what struck me more than anything else was what a pain in the backside it was trying to find parking for it. It also felt unnecessarily large and unless you're taking four adults over great distances, I'd say there are better options, like your Macan GTS. The tech was impressive and I quickly got used to the conveniences of which there were a great many but if I am driving for pleasure, as long as I'm comfortable, those features give way to the quality of the drive.

Personally, if it was a car that I wanted purely for fun with a touch of practicality, I would look to a 991.1 GTS. It's the last naturally aspirated flat six (outside of Weissach GT cars) and they deliver a fantastic driving experience as well as having already taken the depreciation sting. You might have to hunt for the right spec but there are plenty of examples around with 5-10k miles. Alternatively, I would look at a Cayman. The 981 GTS or 987 Cayman R are both excellent although the sports exhaust on the 981 GTS is a bit out of sync in terms of feedback relative to driving input in my view but still sounds better than the 982 cars.

There is some good advice here and IMHO so long as you don't need to sell any children keep browsing the web sites and go for test drives, as you can, for 911's you'll know it when you see it. ;)

Also, if its your first 911 (as I) you don't have to go all out, any Carrera will give the Porsche experience and you'll either want more, be happy, or consider it done!
My other random thoughts for you are:
- An hour is tops in the back unless you are a sadist (my wife is 5'1" - so I know)
- It is a surprisingly practical vehicle when pushed (it will even take roof bars, unlike Caymen)
- A base 991.1 will probably not seem so fast as your S3 everyday but when it hits 5k+ rpm you will be in a different animal (I agree with Arif on N/A engines - but he has worked upto his mega version)
- I enjoy mine just going to the shops or cruising up the mortorway as it is such a complete driving experience, it may not not be the fastest car on the road but I like to think of it as the best
- GTS/GT3/body kit is has everyday issues - I have scraped the front fairing lightly when coming off sleeping policemen at anything over 5mph and have to use a different car for some trips because of it.
- I will be as likely to look at 993's as 992's if I change from mine (just noticed how odd that is :o ) - there is all the tech I need in my phone, that updates and works, for £500. I don't need it bodged into the car.

So don't jump, enjoy the ride while choosing. :D
