No real need to cool down as such but what used to cause no end of issues was on the early fast spinning turbos, people would habitually blip / rev the engine just prior to switching it off leaving no lubrication at all on the spindle as it had just been set off on a high speed whiz!

With modern engines in road cars then yes you are wasting your time and fuel.

Yes, we do that, but really only after some spirited driving at high revs. In normal driving, by the time we park, it's cooled off.

I try and avoid using high revs for the last 10 mins of any journey in any car I have had to try and reduce the amount of heat soak when you park up. Whether it does any good or not I am not sure but I am sure it doesn’t do any harm

I suppose it is a similar principle to a track day when you are advised to do a cool down lap or two

With so many road works in my area, it's just normal to pootle along for the last 5 miles.

Doesn't sound compatible with auto stop/start.

I was also informed by a Rolls Royce engineer that revving the engine before it is switched off is bad as the petrol washes the oil from the bores and leaves less protection for restarts or long periods of no use.

So when is this ‘old enough to know better’ supposed to kick in ?

My thoughts were about the turbochargers, if not left to clear the gasses after driving, the access gasses left inside put unnessarry pressure on the inner seals , hence waiting 30 secs or so before turning off, to clear them .... I have avoided using stop start on all my car because of this worry, although if I’m a traffic I use it because the turbo has a reduced load under these conditions? Mybe I’m wasting my time and fuel buts it’s ingrained mentality, like Changing your oil after the first 1000 miles in a new car.
