A friend has asked me if anyone has tried towing two ponies with a petrol macan, I have a sd and would advises the diesel engine, she does not like the earlier cayenne.

My feeling is that a diesel engine would-be more suitable, I have a factory fit towbar but have not tried pulling two ponies over a field, I would be grateful if any one has tried off road so I can pass on any experiences.

Also i have not used the off road button, of course air suspension may be an idea too, I have boring 18 inch tyres, she may want larger tyres as she is image consious. Thanks.

I tow a 600Kg car on top of a 350kg trailer in my GTS, no problem at all. An SD would be fine I'm sure, but the petrol has plenty of torque for towing as well. Depends on the horses, but the weights involved are probably not vastly different.

A pony box is probably about 600kg. A big horse trailer is 750 to 1000kg. Two ponies are probably about 750kg. Anyway it’s not about the pulling it’s about the stopping.

Nomad - my wife used to tow 2 horses in a dual axle horse box with the GTS. The only issue she ever faced was the embarrassment when the stewarts at an event would comment on the car and that they didn't see many "of those" pulling trailers.. tough luck

I have used my SD to tow a caravan at probably near 1500kg, no problem at all and can still pull away from the average car. Pulled up grassy fields no problem too but I guess largely down to tyres.

My GTS towed our Coachman twin axle 1750kg with ease. Once I had sorted the power to the fridge (euro5&6 alternator issues) it was an exceptional performer (including stopping!!). My only slight concern was the tuning of the air-suspension with which my Range Rover proves to be far more convincing.
Horses do tend to move around while travelling so there can be some disconcerting weight transfers to the tow hitch and with a two horse trailer you are probably over the "recommended" towing limit of 85% of the vehicle weight. Gently does it!!

Thanks to you all, we use a 510 ifor Williams, the lady on question will be traveling with polo ponies, so it's workable, I was less sure if a petrol would-be suitable, a will pass on the comments.

A 510 Ifor is 1000kg empty. We have one. 2 Polos are probably less than 1000kg combined.
