Don’t winter tyres have softer compound than summers?

If so, I imagine AS tyres would also be softer compound than summers?
A lot of people have found their AS tyres very hard-wearing for some reason.

You must be due a new set on the 911 T soon at 12k miles?
A benefit of running summers and winters is that it takes a bit longer before I need to start buying replacement tyres! :P

GTS with 10,000 miles (proper summer tyres though!) and I have about 4mm left - and still need to try harder.

+1. When I sold my last Macan at 22,000 miles my all season 20” Michelins still had 5mm left all round.

Correct Simon, Cheshire Cat got his hard and soft a bit confused!

I asked a tyre manufacture's Technical Director, that I know, for his thoughts....

"Summer should have the hardest compound, AS should have a softer compound for better low temp and wet grip , also AS would have a more mobile tread pattern which would wear quicker. Sometimes the summer tyres fitted at OE may have a softer compound than aftermarket ‘identical’ tyres because the vehicle manufacturers want better wet grip for their cars, these may not be available in the aftermarket!!!
That’s why when we test competitors we tried to get OE and aftermarket tyres for comparison."

As I've mentioned elsewhere my previous Macan's both had AS Tyres which I thought performed well in all weather conditions and never made me feel unsafe no matter how hard the car was being driven. Both also had negligible wear when sold so I concur with others on longevity.

The current Macan has Summers on and although I know they won't perform so well in the cold weather I don't like them. I get a lot of understeer, not dangerous but annoying, they skip more at low speeds, Ackerman affect and they tramline on poor surfaces so much the steering needs constant adjustment which can get quite tiresome. I'm hoping they'll wear very quickly and they feel better in the summer but I'm pretty sure I'm going to swap them for a set of AS's in the Autumn.

I also really rated the 20” Michelin all seasons on my first two Macans. Great comfort and handling in both warm and cold conditions. Grip on snow was also good. My current Macan on 21” Pirelli’s does not inspire the same confidence in cold conditions and I suspect will be pretty hopeless on snow. The wheels do look good though 😀
