Views on the new GT4 - what is limited availability as opposed to limited production? Will it be a future classic? Chances of getting one realistically...?

I don't think the resale restriction we sign is enforceable so you'll probably be able to get one; for a price!

Future classic - a proper Cayman. All the cylinders, the way it was meant to be. My 981 was a great car...................

It will be hard to get hold of, for mere mortals, if you’re not on your OPC’s VIP list. ;)

Very few cars are limited production (e.g. 911R or the new 911 Spyder) but cars like GT3, GT3 RS and GT2 RS are limited availability and pretty hard to get hold of new. Easier to buy a pre-owned one, but at a painful premium. :x

The Christophorus magazine just arrived today and there is a feature on 718 Cayman GT4 and the Spyder (I've not read it yet).
Both cars also feature in this month (no. 264) Evo magazine.

In Evo, Mr Preuningen said: "".... we don't want to make these cars unobtainable or inaccessible for everybody. I think one thing we learned from the last one is a lot of people couldn't get one, especially the enthusiasts, who wanted to buy the cars and use them. We want these enthusiasts to buy the car, not write letters.""

But he does not say how they will go about it.
The dealers should get more allocations this time round, and you should not have to grovel as much. 😉

Having spoken to my OPC - these are pretty limited in numbers so you will have to be a repeated customer to get one. Just to give you an idea, I've had about 7 cars from them before they gave me a GT3 slot.

I wish they would just produce larger numbers so they get rid of the speculators - residuals would still be strong just not over list!

Shame indeed, that you have to be a serial car swapper to even have a chance to obtain these "limited editions". There are plenty of enthusiast drivers who keep their cars long term and use them properly.

The problem Porsche has is that the minute they increased supply to make them easier for mere mortals to obtain, demand would tank as most just buy them for the residuals and not their track prowess. We all want what we cant have much more than the available. So the just cant win and keep supply low to keep them halo cars. I personally have given up on ever getting on the VIP list and just wonder that for anything other than track work what I have already is a much better option.

Agree 100%, Arif!

And they must make more profit on a GT4 than a standard 718, and more profit on a GT3 than a standard 991.2, so can’t see why they don’t make a lot more of the GT cars.

It seems that in the US, more GT cars are available proportionately. For example in 2018 and 2019, Porsche sent a lot more GT3s to the US than Carrera Ts. Even numbers for the GT3 RS and GT2 RS we’re higher than for the T in North America!

Hi Rab,

I think that your GTS, or even my humble T, are better road cars for daily use than a GT3 etc. Same with a Cayman GTS being a better daily driver than a GT4 or Spyder.

Not many would run a GT3 as a sole car/daily driver and clock up 18,600 miles/smiles in the first 15 months! ;)

Cheers,
Simon
