Whilst I knew before I bought the Macan S that I would get whacked by government taces I have to admit that I didn’t investigate just how much. My wife now wants a an SLC and now I am trying to work out how much that tax might be. Below is sone stuff I downloaded which seems to suggest that (e.g. the Macan) I get whacked for it being over £40k and also because the CO2 is. . . what is the CO2

First year car tax rates from 1 April 2019
CO2 emissions (g/km) Petrol Diesel
0 £0 £0
1-50 £10 £25
51-75 £25 £110
76-90 £110 £130
91-100 £130 £150
101-110 £150 £170
111-130 £170 £210
131-150 £210 £530
151-170 £530 £855
171-190 £855 £1280
191-225 £1280 £1815
226-255 £1815 £2135
More than 255 £2135 £2135

Vehicles with a list price of more than £40,000
You have to pay an extra £320 a year if you have a car or motorhome with a ‘list price’ (the published price before any discounts) of more than £40,000. You only have to pay this rate for 5 years (from the second time the vehicle is taxed).

Fuel type Single 12 month payment
Petrol or diesel £465

Yes the 40k limit with surcharge came in 2017 from memory. You need to keep your eye on the ball with these things hence why I made sure my GTS was registered before the April 2017 deadline.

Also means the multitude of small engined petrol and diesel cars that previously were zero road tax due to low emission now are all charged at £140 per year as long as they are under £40k

Buy a tractor!

Road tax is zero.

Downside is you can't go more than 15 miles from home and top speed is limited.

We've got a couple of little ATVs for local trips.

The post 2017 Porsches will be the ones everyone wants in a few years when their road tax is £140. There is a world of great cars that are now worthless simply because once the buyer sees £550 or what ever the tax is these days its a deal breaker so walks away.

Agree it is very offputting to see something
Old with a big engine for maybe a few grand but then £550 a year to tax. Puts buyers right off.

A Macan Turbo registered before April 2017 will cost you £325 a year to tax (as mine does).

Anybody buying a new S will pay £1280 1st year and £465 fo another 5 years after that (as the car's list price is over £40,000). When the car is 7 years old, you will then pay £145 per year.

Likewise, anybody buying a used Macan S registered on or after 1st April 2017 will have to pay £465 a year until the car is 7 years old.

So, those buying new or nearly new will certainly take a hit.
For those on a tighter budget, it will be best to buy approved used at say 3 to 4 years old so you get 2 years warranty and pay the higher car tax for only 3 years or so.

I’m not being disrespectful but you don’t buy a Porsche for economy, Road tax is what it is, it wouldn’t stop me buying the car of my choice, people will buy a Porsche regardless

Totally agree Spud I bought my Porsche in May 2017 post the new tax banding. So I pay £465 p.a. which is well less than 1% of the cost of the car.

Whilst I agree to a large extent, there is a marginal effect whereby marginal buyers are turned away. Others decide to retain current cars rather than buy facelift. That affects demand and the market turns with knock-on effects through used prices and resale values.

For instance, there is a discussion on one of the UK BMW Forums, how many who bought 340is on PCCP with large discounts 3 or 4 years ago pre 2017, are being pushed by the £40000 limit towards GOLF GTIs and equivalent or retaining there current cars
