I recently achieved 60k on a set of Latitude Tour HP tyres. I couldn't believe it! Guess what we put on as a replacement?

happy days I reckon that says a lot about how well you drive your Porsche. 60k is exceptional.

It's beloved's car - the 718 is my daily driver. She drives 50 miles each way to work in Belfast, 40 of them on motorways. I was really surprised!

Regarding the Pirelli failure on Chilgrove's Macan, it's difficult to say the cause of this without seeing a section - could be lack of under tread between bottom of groove and thr steel belt.

If it was not in the tread centre I would have suspected an issue with suspension- but 31k mileage not bad with lots of wear left.

How old were they?
What size wheels?

I bought the car new at the end of December 2018 so the car and tyres are just over 3.5 years old.
The tyres sizes are: Front 235/60 R18 and the Rear 255/55 R18. Pirelli.
Now fitted are Michelin Latitude Tour HP (NO approval). All marked X Green.

Just checked ATS Euromaster [Michelin owned tyre distributor] and I see that a set of 4 x Michelin Latitude Tour HP in Porsche approved NO tyres in your sizes comes out at £575.96 fully fitted. You quote the Porsche dealer charging £619.

ATS are far from the cheapest too. There are several reputable prestige specialist tyre dealers that would charge less.

Something very odd about these tyres. The steel belting should be in the carcass and not showing in the tread no matter how shallow. From your photos there seems to be a legal amount still on the tyre which points to a defect.

Regarding prices, maybe I should have shopped around more but my usual place was much more expensive than Porsche (and I like the idea of the work being done by Porsche themselves). Regarding the amount of tread left then yes I agree, there was loads of tread left. I did suggest to the Porsche dealership that in my opinion there is a flaw but not sure if they will follow that up or not. Does the steel belting not extend right across the face of the tread and also the sidewalls? I have never before seen damage like this in the centre of a car tyre.

Without examining the tyre[s] it looks like a manufacturing defect. Unless the front tyres were subjected to a heavy impact in the centre line of each one. Or the vehicle has been left for long periods with the the tyre half on and half off a pavement alternately on both n/s and o/s....then the rears would be subject to this failure too.

So more likely insufficient under-tread between the tread section / cap plies and the steel belt. The tread rubber is extruded separately as is the sidewall rubber etc in tyre construction:-

There's metal edges in the Eurotunnel standard carriages that look like they could do that sort of damage if you're not careful (hence I book over-height usually).
