The handbrake does automatically engage when you leave the car. From the manual:

Automatic engagement of the parking brake

The vehicle is stationary.
Operating mode D, R or M selected.
Driver’s door is opened.
Driver’s seat belt is unfastened.
The electric parking brake engages automatically

I seldom use it.

Surely in P the transmission is locked. All four wheels are effectively 'braked'. Are you seriously suggesting that the transmission lock is plastic?

3 Is the pawl for parking lock, which interlocks with the parking 'gear' 2.

I was also told at PEC yesterday that "P" uses a pin (not sure it would be plastic though). The instructor advised that I also used handbrake unless on flat ground.

Yep use handbrake otherwise the tranny 'winds up' and can make disengaging the parking lock difficult.
