So having now had my Macan for about 5 weeks and with it coming up to 3 years old at the end of this month I thought I would like to get a Porsche Extended Warranty on it. Had the initial "oh you have to own it for 12 weeks before we can even look at it" from my local OPC crap, so went to one who was not that daft and quite happy to do the 111 point check and then put a warranty on it no problem or so I thought.

So took in for it's check and it past all the checks no problem, however I had had fitted an aftermarket removable Westfalia towbar as Porsche use this brand. So because of this the OPC refused to pass it off for an extended Warranty, unless I had them fit a Porsche approved Electric Towbar at over £ 2000. I rarely use the towbar, hence fitting a simple manually fitted removable one. I just find this incredible to be honest but I guess I shouldn't as I've experienced previous rather ridiculous "rules" with Porsche when looking to buy some of the Supercar range, didn't bother in the end and walked away, very happy with other brands.

Any suggestions or is this just a reason to make this my last Porsche, despite actually really liking the car ?

I guess you've found out the hard way that non-standard parts mean that in Porsche's book. That's why I had the mini dealer fit the non-OEM tow bar before buying the car, for the same reason as you, even an OEM mini retro fit is a crazy price. Guess they don't know how well it's fitted or what software mods are made if any :?
In my experience the Porsche extended warranty is excellent as they will diagnose the even "trivial /transient" issues free so do hope you find a solution.

Pragmatically the main thing that would worry me on a Macan is a transfer box failure but at ~£1k/yr warranty not sure where the break even point is on an item like that?

On being your last Porsche that is really your choice - they keep their reputation by sticking t o their rules ;)

Thanks for your reply Ferdie, with what is going on at the moment with CV the world is a very changing place and in many ways there are far more important things.
However, can I ask what you mean by the Tow Bar you had fitted ? you seemed to suggest it was non-OEM, but that doesn't comply with their policy. Or was that just mis-typing ?
On mine there were no software mods, it's a simple Plug in to the rear fuse box, again Westfalia kit, and from previous VW Group cars it will be be the same as OPC fit more than likely, which is what annoys me about the whole thing. I would be fine if they excluded it from the warranty, could understand that.

Unfortunately I've really not had good experiences with OPC's so far.

Nick - it might be worth talking to another OPC about your tow bar fitment and to get their view on whether they will do the extended warranty for you. Just a thought if you've got some time on your hands to do a ring around of your nearest OPCs.

OPC's might change their attitude if forum members named and shamed them more

The only factory towbar option on the Macan is the fully electric one.

Yep, I did the research before and just thought that's way more than I want to pay for something I am only going to use maybe 3 times a year maximum.

Well being new here, I didn't want to jump straight in, so have tried to hold things back a bit as you might have gathered I'm very pissed off by it. and it's not like I'm not used to owning high end cars.
So as you asked my local dealer who said 90 days ownership which was a total joke was Newcastle. the I took it to Edingbugh. I can afford to self warranty and maybe in the current climate I may well do so and if the Transfer box goes which reading this forum is quite likely I just end up in court with Porsche and a specialist lawyer, that'll be fun ;)

It's nothing to do with the OPC really, the rules are laid down by Porsche. The 90 day rule, no modifications and the 111 point check requirement are all Porsche rules.

Nick, on a lighter note, would you like to share details of the other cars in your stable? :)

Cheers,
Simon
