Update - Whilst there has been a change in the method of calculating year 1 I did not correctly interpret the charts for subsequent years which don't now appear to have changed. Sorry for any confusion I have caused however I do not think we have seen the last of the tax system being used to encourage EV ownership.

In case you have missed the news on road tax the government have quietly introduced a new road tax system to discourage the ownership of SUV cars and encourage owners to move to EV with effect from 1st April registrations.

https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-rate-tables

In general for the band's where our cars sit new cars will pay the first year amount annually without any reduction at year 6. Eg 2.0 with 185g co2 is £870 annually and S with 204g is £1305 annually. I am personally relieved they didn't make this retrospective in any way as the motoring press had been speculating?

Will this make you consider EV over a new Macan next time around?

Thats not how I read it. It still says “first licence rate”

Yes, after April 1 the first registration fee is £1305 / £1850 etc but it reverts back to £150 plus £325 for cars over £40K for the next 5 years, then £150.

No, it's still only the high rate for the first year.

Rates for second tax payment onwards
Fuel type Single 12 month payment Single 12 month payment by Direct Debit Total of 12 monthly payments by Direct Debit Single 6 month payment Single 6 month payment by Direct Debit
Petrol or diesel £150 £145 £152.25 £79.75 £76.13
Electric £0 N/A N/A £0 N/A
Alternative £140 £135 £141.75 £74.25 £70.88
Alternative fuel vehicles include hybrids, bioethanol and liquid petroleum gas.

Vehicles with a list price of more than £40,000
You have to pay an extra £325 a year if you have a car or motorhome with a ‘list price’ (the published price before any discounts) of more than £40,000.

You only have to pay this rate for 5 years (from the second time the vehicle is taxed).

Check the list price with your dealer so you know how much vehicle tax you’ll have to pay.
Fuel type Single 12 month payment Single 12 month payment by Direct Debit Total of 12 monthly payments by Direct Debit Single 6 month payment Single 6 month payment by Direct Debit
Petrol or diesel £465 £465 £488.25 £255.75 £244.13
Alternative £455 £455 £477.75 £250.25 £238.88

I was already EV next time round irrespective of current road fund charges. it is the way the world is going and is going to be hard to fight.

However next time round for me will only happen when there is an adequate fast charger network, spread to even the less populated areas of the country like North Norfolk and Mid Wales. By adequate I mean every 30 miles or so with little queuing on arrival at busy times.

Until I intend running my 2019 Macan S

I'd take out the extended warranty then. You're going to be running your Macan for a very long time!

I had hoped to extend to five years warranty before April 17th, the one year anniversary but the lockdown has stopped that. My expectation is that my condition may not be met for at least seven years. If the Macan's mileage is getting high at some stage I buy something like a Zoe for short-run. Keeping the Macan for the 7K annual mileage I do on longer trips.

Thanks Nick,Paul for more detail. Of course, you are right about the changes not being as dramatic as it appeared to me. It appears the big headlines in the press today are misleading and the only increases relate to the new testing method to set the first year figure.

Not so bad for now.

I am paying £200 per annum with my 2017 Macan S Diesel. I own it outright now. I sense if I can keep for the next 5 years at least and then go for the Macan EV that will be money well spent. Currently doing low annual mileage nowadays (especially now!) but when used on a long distance run to clear out the DPF etc.....
