I spent a few hours at Mercedes World at Brooklands in the days when an AMG 63 actually had the 6.3 (ish) engine. The sound was absolutely fantastic.

In 2010 I went to Stuttgart to collect an E Class. During the factory tour an SLS with the 6.3 engine was moved from the end of the production line to a storage area and the sound echoing around the factory was the best car sound I've ever heard.

Unfortunately, I never owned a 63 but did have an E Class 350 CDI with the 265hp diesel and that was pretty amazing.

Best engine in two BMW E36 325i's 6cyl in line six , lovely instant non turbo response to throttle if kept above 2500 rpm and so smooth.

For NOISE and endless power I love the V8 in my FType

The most impressed I’ve been though was with the humble Golf R 2.0 engine which was chipped to 400bhp and had zero issues in 95k miles.....whilst still returning 38mpg when driven sensibly. Joys of new technology and reliability!

Let’s assume that since Macan has a Porsche-tweaked engine, it is classified as Porsche.

My best engine was 3.0L straight-6, twin-turbo motor, mounted in a BMW 435i

What was/is yours?
The most memorable engine was the 3Ltr straight six in my mid '80's 528i. I now have the current version of that engine in my 2019 440i convertible, more horses and talks and so smooth. The car would have been a Boxster but I considered the Beemer package superior. After 3 Porsche, it was time to move on.

I guess I have to say that my "best engine" would have to be the 13B-REW in my 3rd Gen Twin Turbo RX-7.

Not the best noise with the stock exhaust, but just different in every way and utterly fascinating with a techie geek hat on.

Gotta be the E30 BMW 325i straight six in my Touring. Pulled like a train in 3rd/4th above 4k rpm, and had that delightful twin stainless exhaust all the way through that sounded sublime, both at idle and when driving like you stole it.
So silky smooth it was that we could even balance a 50p upright on the cylinder head at tickover and it would notwobble over!
