Work in progress to get my 1967 Elan Plus 2 back on the road. Complete nut and bolt rebuild following the fitting of a replacement chassis due to the usual corrosion on the front suspension upright on the chassis. It now runs but current hold up is getting the original Rev counter working with electronic ignition. Once sorted its install the dash and doors and send it to the trimmers.

What a great project, how long has it been underway and are you doing it yourself? Would be good to follow your journey with pics. 👍

Nice job! Looks like a fun task and no doubt very rewarding too.

Engine shot reminds me of my Lotus Cortina days.........

Thanks for the nice comments, the Plus 2 has been in rebuild for a very long time. I moved to Aberdeen in 1985 and discovered the front chassis uprights were badly corroded so took the body off and ordered a replacement Spyder stressed skin chassis. Moved to Lincolnshire in mid 1986 so dropped the body back on a rolling chassis and it went to a barn on the in laws farm for several years but eventually made it back to Lincolnshire in the early 1990’s. Decided to strip the paint off for a bare shell respray, started the work myself but had health problems so sent it to a local restoration specialist. He had it for some time and completely stripped everything out of the shell, but then retired on I’ll health so the car came back as a bare shell and loads of boxes and bags with supposedly all the bits in them. It then sat like that for a few years as we moved house and I was commuting weekly from Lincolnshire to Aberdeen for work, that went on for over 8 years! Finally sent the bare shell to a local paint specialist for a respray and dropped the shell back on the chassis. Started looking at it again and found that all the rubber parts that had been replaced years ago in Aberdeen needed replacing again!
Started the rebuild and that’s when I found that not all the pieces came back in the bags and boxes, no pedal box, gear lever, some trim parts, door catches etc were missing, so that was the start of an eBay hunt!
In the middle of this, we had flooding which got into the garage and soaked all the parts stored in boxes on the floor, it also wrote of my wife’s Mini too. Spent a week of so getting everything out of the garage, washing it down with WD40 and cleaning and drying everything.
Didn’t do much more till I retired for the second time so now I’m finally back on it. All new brakes, bushes, dampers, new wiring harnesses, brake servo (another bit that didn’t come back). The engine runs fine, it’s only done about 5000 miles since it was rebuilt before the chassis change back in the 80’s. Fiddly bits left to do now before it goes to be professionally trimmed, things like boot floor, door hinges and window motors, sound system, etc.

Flippin' 'eck! You must have been ready to slit your wrists after some of that lot! It's obviously going to be a top job when done and all the more rewarding after all those challenges. Will be great to see the next stages and final result. Hopefully it's not at risk of further flooding?

Wow, when I said “it would be good to follow your journey” I certainly didn’t expect such a story. The only project that I can compare this to is marriage! Indeed you could draw many similarities 🤐 Full respect for your diligence and determination 👍

After 3 years of ownership, with the market so strong at the moment I decided (sadly) to part with my 2017 Elise ☹️ The car has been a real hoot and actually the cheapest sports car I have ever owned. Sipped fuel, low cost maintenance, insurance under £200 and depreciation cost £70 a month! The biggest cost was the annual road tax as it was over £40k new.

Am I sad. No not really, though I did enjoy falling into my brilliant Blue motor and blowing off those lockdown cobwebs. Getting out was becoming less elegant 🙄

Besides I’ve just placed my priority deposit on this 🥳 😎.

The initial rollout of first edition vehicles are all with the current V6 Toyota engine and if I stick to manual it’s the only option. Although I do fancy the AMG i4 (M139) engine and DCT box, spent to much time enjoying PDK I guess, plus this is going to be a cruiser rather than a bruiser. They have just six colours on offer at the moment and I do like four of them, but Blue with Black Pack (as below) is where I’m at right now. There’s plenty of time to deliberate, currently only two completed for marketing purposes and only one of them actually fully operational. Think they are yet to finish destruction testing them first⁉️Hoping it gets here before I have to replace my original paper 50 year licence 🙄
