I think the point is that they probably hold their money better than most other things.
If you went second hand and nearly new you are likely not to lose much over your ownership period.
Even more so now they are being discontinued
I’d have an Elise over an exige for road use. My red one above was the best for that and that was the bottom of the range one with only 130bhp
Memo to all: I also drive a Lotus members
True, it is minimalist, hand built and in very low numbers (you should check out a Morgan cost). Go post April 2017 cars you will pick up the VED supplement, but tyres, maintenance and fuel cost is really low, plus the biggest issue “Depreciation” is tiny by comparison to most, especially if you choose a nearly new or up to 2 year used. All makes the extra £325 insignificant by comparison. As a BC do the math but definitely try before you buyCounter Of Beans wrote: ↑Wed Jan 27, 2021 9:49 am I have been looking at an Elise as a fun weekend car, but what has really put me off is the prices. New ones are £40k or more so you get hit with five years of £325 VED supplement, and £40k seems an awful lot for something so, er, minimalist. I get the "money spent on engineering" point, but it's still a lot of cash. Even a 2016 model is £30k plus. And when I look at asking prices for Exiges and Evoras I'm genuinely surprised that they sell any. For clarity, I'm referring to road use only - I accept that a track car is a different thing altogether.

Fantastic colour!MikeM wrote: ↑Wed Jan 27, 2021 9:18 am I agree, it will probably be more refined although if that’s the case not sure it will have much appeal for many long term Elise and Exige owners? I consider them as seriously capable raw fun, to outright track racers that by comparison to others are economical to run. Personally never considered Evora’s as they didn’t fit IMO that criteria, I would always choose a 911 over it. As already stated prices have risen dramatically the entry level base Exige is £62k. Took the Lotus licence two years ago with three whole days at Hethel, they were just starting on the new Halls for the Evija build. The Lotus guys were clearly excited with their new owners and the long awaited investment. Nice pics here’s another.

Fair points, thanks. As you say, depreciation is the real killer, and these cars appear to have fantastic retained values. Spoken like a true bean counter! Regarding "try before you buy", again good advice. I'm 6ft tall and not fat exactly, but have a typically late middle aged tummy. Plus I have stiff knees from years of football and squash - I'm about as flexible as a breezeblock. Will I struggle to get in and out of an Elise? I suppose it must be easier with the roof off?MikeM wrote: ↑Wed Jan 27, 2021 10:25 am True, it is minimalist, hand built and in very low numbers (you should check out a Morgan cost). Yes, lots but many do find it a challenge even then. There is certainly a knack and suitable attire, you will either learn to love it or hate it. A far cry from the discussions on here re high bolsters on sports seatsCounter Of Beans wrote: ↑Wed Jan 27, 2021 12:53 pmFair points, thanks.
