How much will Greta cost us?

My geography teacher told us that volcanoes pump out more crap into the atmosphere in a year (remember there are also undersea volcanoes no one ever hears about) than humans have since they discovered fire and that although we should look after the planet the whole global warming subject was bollocks as they couldn't tax volcanoes!!!
And he told me that when did my geography A-level in 1982!!!!

Or solar flares!!!
Gosh, I'm having flashbacks!
I'll start seeing blackboard rubbers flying across the room next!!!

Might have been true a long time ago but recent best estimates put all volcanic CO2 at around 200 million tonnes and human production at 24 BILLION!Nelladrahcir wrote: ↑Sat Oct 30, 2021 12:09 pm My geography teacher told us that volcanoes pump out more crap into the atmosphere in a year (remember there are also undersea volcanoes no one ever hears about) than humans have since they discovered fire and that although we should look after the planet the whole global warming subject was bollocks as they couldn't tax volcanoes!!!

I think part of the problem since the early 1800s when the greenhouse effect was quantified is the nobody could imagine the vast amount of CO2 we'd release.
We're approaching 8 Billion tonnes of coal burnt per year which is a lot.
One interesting facet of volcanic activity is the amount of energy coming through the crust under Antarctica, it could be a significant contributor to sea level rise.

Thanks for the update Tim. The lesson was a long long time ago.
You got me googling now and it really is a fascinating subject still.

Bet they'll try and find a way to tax that!!!

Thanks for the link, it's amazing how much of the world is getting analysed. Maybe one day we'll have the knowledge and motivation to fix the damage done.
One of the worst episodes was the Permian extinction 250 m years ago, about 95% of life disappeared.
CO2 production was exacerbated by toxic levels of Nickel released during the formation of the Siberian Flats.
Hopefully the world is less active now.

I would like to know the true cost to the planet from COP 26.
30,000 delegates and others arriving by private jets / jets / trains.....
10,000 police driving the length of the UK in their petrol / diesel cars / vans.....
Biden with his 45 cars / police motorbikes.....
I'm sure that Greta will have walked here

Just love this forum, we go from the worlds greatest Mass Extinction event to did “Greta walk to COP 26” Really ironic to see those many young people’s demonstrating whilst mostly glued onto their mobile devices. If the internet was a country it would be the 6th largest CO2 emitter in the world. Guess that would make Omni the 7th Better get off it now.

According to an initial assessment report for the UK government the carbon emissions for COP26 are expected to reach the equivalent of 102,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide.ScotMac wrote: ↑Fri Nov 12, 2021 8:32 pm I would like to know the true cost to the planet from COP 26.

That is similar to the annual emissions from about 10,000 UK households.
The figure for COP26 is double the emissions from the last climate summit in Madrid in 2019.
