I celebrated the 69th anniversary of my birth last week and, as a treat, my youngest son turned up with a new S class Mercedes for the weekend. It was black and a 350d diesel with lots of toys. The first outing was on Friday night in the heavy rain, not ideal as we were going to one of our favourite pubs for Dinner, The Boot at Willington if anyone knows it. Narrow country lanes with vehicles parked on them. This was not the time for my lad to tell me it was worth £102,000.00! For such a big car it handled well and had a turn of speed. No idea what the economy was during the 90 odd miles I did in it. I was disappointed with the ride for such a car especially down the 'Wibbly wobbly way' also known as Marbury Road in Comberbach but I'm sure a Rolls would struggle with the war zone road surface. Other than that, it was very comfy on other roads. I could hear the engine and feel some vibrations through the pedals which, again, was unexpected. Also, the vents on the dash reflected onto the windscreen. As with most modern cars, many functions were controlled via a huge touchscreen or a fingerprint screen as it's other wise known as. Give me buttons and switches any day. I spent 20 minutes going through the controls which made it easier, but I need glasses for reading and couldn't see the screen whilst on the move. Headlights were literally brilliant as was the rear wheel steering. Certainly the car for long distance travel but, even if I had the spare loot, I wouldn't buy one. Too big to park and to wash plus I would worry about it being vandalised by some WOKE group of nutters. Nice to see how the other half live.

The Boot? Yes, was there for Sunday lunch in June, good pub and food! Friends who live just around the corner in Kelsall introduced me to it a couple of years back and it's a great rendezvous for meeting old friends from the Wirral! I can recommend the Pheasant at Tattenhall too, especially on a sunny evening! Views to die for, second only to the Barrel at Bretton in Derbyshire.

Hi left the porsche fold to spend four years with an S class. Having owned most of the range at some time or other, just wanted to say I made it to the top!, Brilliant car a faultless 25,000 miles in luxury surroundings. Financially crazy!! £80000 discounted to £59000 with very little haggling. After four years and completely unmarked inside and out we buy any car offered £25500 . At £27000 auto trader produced no takers. I must stress it didn’t look more than a few months old. With mixed feelings about the whole experience I simply returned the car to Mercedes. As our cars are always maintained meticulously can’t help feeling my Macan GTS that I sold to get the Mercedes could well have a residual close to double that of the Mercedes.
Now happily enjoying a new gen2 S whilst occasionally dreaming of a 911.

Yes, still smelled new although I couldn't smell any leather. Perhaps it was Mercs fake leather but whatever it was, it was ok. My son said 99% of 'S'class sales are leases and they don't sell that many these days. As for residuals, try owning a JLR product and see your money disappear. Maybe not as much in these strange times. With the S class, demand isn't exactly high.

The S Class was always the car that signified you'd arrived. I remember being in Hong Kong at various times during the 1990s and seeing many S600 versions of the W140 S Class. You could easily tell them by the V12 logo on the C pillar. Hong Kong and the New Territories had a 40mile/h speed limit so, of course, all that power was really necessary and not for show at all

The W140 was the last of the over engineered Mercedes and some are still around.
