As the Model 3 is making news (just about shipping on time), I amused myself by visiting the website.
Even though it's the UK site, prices for the 3 are in USD and they still claim "from $35k".
So, bored, I looked at the model S.
The most important factor is range, so that's the 100D with claimed 393 miles. £90k though (ouch), so there's the 75 at 304 miles for £61½k. But that extra 90 miles is important so maybe the extra £28½k is worthwhile.
So, what do you get with the 100D?
Nice interior? No, that's the Premium Upgrades Package at £3500
"Enhanced Autopilot" that everyone raves about? No, that's £5000
"Full-self driving" - No, that's another £3000 on top of the "Enhanced Autopilot".
Working ok in low temperatures? That'll be another £1000
A sound system to take advantage of the quiet cabin? £2500
Extra seats in the back. Gulp. £4000
OK, I could do without the seats, but that's still £15k options to get it close to the hype.
But this isn't the P100D with the hyped performance figures. That's £131,800 - £41k over the 100D!!
And you still have to pay for the above options.
Tesla prices
Two or three times a year I drive to Bavaria, One section of the route from Cologne to Frankfurt is around 120 miles of autobahn which features some really quick unlimited bits, a number of hills and, if you're like me, the opportunity to use the car's performance.
Wonder what the range is driving this road on a hot day in summer using the performance and with the a/c working hard.
Intrigued by the notion of all electric cars - will probably have a look at Jag I-Pace - but apprehensive about usability as a main car. As a second local runabout electric cars seem to make sense. Have driven a neighbours Nissan Leaf. Not the most exciting car but nice to drive with a surprising turn of speed in the zero to forty range and perfectly good enough for local journeys.

I saw two model Xs today parked not far from each other on the same road in Sydney today. Don't mind the cars, but the price tag..... ouch!

I have a BMW i3 REx - it's a great runabout, but one of three/four cars in the households so can live with the compromised range. The Tesla is just too expensive in my book particularly as the interior does feel low rent.

One of my wife's accountancy clients was talking about getting a Tesla to save on tax. But spending £100K+ in the process is kind of missing the point I think! I had a look inside one recently and it seemed like a computer nerd's idea of heaven on wheels. Not for me thanks, it totally lacks any sort of charisma.
Although I do quite like the idea of an electric car for local trips (at sensible money). Only the Nissan Leaf seems to make any financial sense at the moment, but it's too much of a granny's car for my taste. I quite like the BMW i3, but a tad too small and expensive for what it is. The eGolf would probably be my choice right now, but still too expensive compared to a normal Golf. I guess early adopters are still paying over the odds for electric, but should make sense in a couple of years when more mainstream.
