Why do they do that?

A bit of a vent.

Had my renewal through from Admiral on my MINI while I was away and decided to sort it out last night. They wanted £378, approx. £60 more than last year's.

So as the Macan is with Aviva I though I'd give them a go. Low and behold £326 including No claims protection and Legal cover which were both extras on the price above. So I bought it.

Phoned Admiral to tell them I wasn't renewing as I got a better deal elsewhere and the guy says hang on a minute we might be able to beat that. Comes back 2 minutes later and gives me a price of £292. Out of principle I refused it. If they were prepared to screw me out of more than £80 just because I might have been lazy enough to let the renewal go though without checking they're not getting my business no matter how much cheaper they are.

That's just the nature of the business and your principles cost you money. I bet if you countered Aviva they'd go even lower.

Bugger, ain't it?

Yes, every year it's the same story.....always press the "cancellation" option at renewal; they have a bigger % latitude for negotiation (and might even be in the UK!😉)

Bought my wife a new 5 door Mini Cooper in May. On renewal a couple of weeks ago existing insurer Liverpool Victoria wanted £420 but Admiral via the meerkat wanted £237. Suffice to say that went with Admiral.

Yes it's not nice but they do this. Anyone with Admiral should always push them and they will generally beat the cheapest quote you can find. That was my experience with them for a number of years.
I am no longer with them as wanted a better policy.
I do wonder what kind of service you will get though as and when they are required on a serious level. Not just a general small claim for a damaged door etc....how can a company changing peanuts give you a high level of service..... maybe they are very well run and efficient..😳

Must say I was surprised at how well Admiral dealt with my rear end shunt last year. No problem in getting work done by a reputable high end Porsche approved repairer including covered trailer pick up and return.

+1
My claim for a rear bumper (£1600 odd) was dealt with smoothly (ish) although I did have to be fairly insistant to obtain my choice of repairer...not a huge issue, just don't allow yourself to be railroaded by the claim handler.

No principles with insurance companies so its just a matter of sucking it up every renewal and playing their silly game. They judge that there will be enough mugs out there who will simply pay up. As long as your not one all's well.

Yes it's always a shop around game. The last couple of times I haven't been able to get an admiral quote even via other comparison sites. Also found Direct Line to be extremely cheap.

Last year I paid £480 for my Merc CLS. I think it was similar insurance group to GTS. When I changed in May it cost me £30 extra to cover me until end of June when my annual policy was due for renewal. My renewal price from Hastings Direct went up to £1400 for the GTS 😲😲

Shopped around and ended up with Aviva for £520 for same cover. Plus awaiting my £60 cashback via Quidco. I always shop around as I've never had a renewal that's less than the previous year.
