A similar vein to "how is my driving" apps from Aviva, et al, from a data protection point of view.

Also drives home the fact that if you finance the car you really don't own it.

If you hack the device, presumably there's another that lets the finance company know you've moved it without paying. A tracker basically.

Seems a great scheme for the finance houses to loan money to those who can't actually afford the repayments!

Next step would be a kill switch for people speeding, or driving in an 'unsafe' manner...

I don't think it will ever happen here. There are far too many issues and uncontrollable factors involved. It just makes good copy!

I recall a similar system was brought over here from South Africa but used by the owner / driver of the car in the event of a car-jacking. Not sure why it never caught on; possibly regulations or maybe not enough car-jacking in the UK (thankfully!)

Cos it's simply unworkable.

It's happened already. What's uncertain is whether laws will be checked and the practice stopped.

Everyone's favourite megalomaniac Musk as said he wants this.
Audi have said that the "Audi AI" will detect a driver not being "in full control" and taking over, and coming to a safe stop.
Volvo have made similar statements over the years.

So, yea.
