You would be fine if there was a Tesla Supercharger en route, but I believe they are a bit sparse in Scotland. But what some people don't realise is that you can also charge at most other EV charging stations too, which are now pretty much everywhere. Still takes more planning than finding a petrol station, but not that much.Col Lamb wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2017 4:24 pm I have just booked tickets for an open air concert next year in Scotland.
Now if I had a Tesla: -
Journey to venue from home is 200 miles, therefore I would definately have to stop enroute to charge it back up.
Park in the City centre to sight see for the afternoon and hopefully find a charge point to top up.
Travel a few miles to the venue car park where there definately will be no charge points.
After convcert travel to our hotel 30 miles away where the hotel at present does not have charge points.
Set off to travel back the 170 miles home but will have to stop after about 70 miles to top up.
Unknown if the rapid partial top up will actually get me back home or if I will have to stop again.
So range anxiety will be there, not impossible to cater for but careful planning and an economy would drive called for.
There is no doubt that the A to B overall time to cover the 200 miles would be a fair bit longer with an EV
Charging time can be an issue too, particularly on slower chargers. So on longer trips you would certainly have to accept 30 min+ stops every 150-200 miles. Personally, I'm happy to trade that inconvenience for never having to go near a petrol station for the vast majority of my annual mileage, simply topping up charge overnight at home at minimal cost.
EVs are not for everyone just yet for all sorts of practical reasons, but I think for those who can make it work they are a very tempting option.
