Just had an email from Volvo about 21st September launch of the XC40 - which I had been totally unware of (as I am not quite as a religious follower of Volvo as Porsche!). Googled and found the following which you may have all seen already:

Current Porsches: 991.2 GT3 RS
Previous Porsches: Macan x4 (one of each), Panamera x2, 996x2, 997x2, Cayenne S, Boxster S, Cayman S x2, Boxster Spyder, 991.1 Turbo S, 991.2 GT3 (manual), 718 Cayman GTS (PDK)
Others: way too many...

I do hope that they put in some decent engines and do not castrate the model to start off with.

It was going to get a Tsomething hybrid at some point. Not the T8 but still potentially fun.

Interesting. And offering a T5. But I personally think the XC90 is better looking, although clearly several car sizes bigger.

AFAIK all that's been announced so far is FWD only and a max of 180bp (and that's the hybrid's total!). So, terminally boring.

Here's hoping that they get a bit more adventurous in time. If they can achieve 4WD, 300bhp and sub 6 sec 0-60 (which they probably need to do to rival eg Ateca Cupra or T-Roc R) then I might start to get more interested.

Would make a good Qashqai alternative I would have thought. 180 hp is probably enough for a bit of fun on most roads, but depends a lot on how it handles. Volvo rarely focus on sporty handling, so I would expect something more relaxed but with more style than most alternatives.

Agreed on Volvo's handling bias. But 180bhp max in a moderately heavy body is going to be no better than half the non-city cars out there. Volvo have done T8's in XC60 and XC90 models - it would be nice to think they might do the same with XC40. Otherwise other manufacturers (in the VW group) will have that base covered. Volvo's loss.

Maybe, but I can't imagine buyers of these giving a damn about HP unless it's properly underpowered, and even then people don't seem to care much.

You only have to look at the larger Disco Sport (until very recently only available in the UK with a max 180 hp) to see that most typical SUV buyers don't really care that much about performance. I very much doubt Volvo will focus on performance either, it's not really their thing. Even the T8 XC60 and 90s are not really about performance, more effortless cruising. I expect the 180 hp hybrid Volvo XC40 will be more than adequate for 99% of potential buyers and the other 1% who "need/want" more power will buy something more inherently sporty anyway.
