I know the base engine is different but some know how to make turbo engines sound good.
My McLaren with its sports exhaust is just loud and rather a drone - I don't mind it but its not great. A similar sized base V8 in Mercedes AMG, particularly in the GT R, sounds utterly epic.
An Audi TT RS with a turbo 5 pot sounds pretty good. So I remain optimistic!
718 GTS just launched
That's my hope to Virage, but just wondering what they can do with the 4 cylinder engine.

I've really enjoyed the miles I've done in two loaner 718 Boxters. The car flies when you give it some gas and the engine howls nicely at high revs, but when pottering around town there are times when it can sound like a Tuk-Tuk!

Plus its sounds very agricultural when you first start it.
Chris Harris was complaining about the "parpy" engine sound on TG the other day. He liked the 718 otherwise, but was seriously lamenting on the passing of the 6 pot engines. I wouldn't be that fussed on an everyday car, but I can see his point on a fun weekend sportscar. You quickly get used to a power increase, but you will always miss the glorious sound.
It is a tricky one and I for one have been moaning about turbo engines for a while, at least until AMG's latest hot V iterations. I think I have reconciled in my own head that, apart from an ever decreasing number of limited cars (e.g. GT3), every sports car will soon by turbo only and those at the - relatively - cheaper end of the market are going to be smaller capacity than some of those at the higher end which will never help noise. Will be interesting to hear what the Merc Project One sounds like with a 1.6 turbo given that current F1 engines are rather lame vs older ones from a noise perspective.

But all this talk means I am going to try a 718 Cayman with sports exhaust when I next pass my OPC in two weeks time!

One option is to pipe in some fake noise through the audio system. It's been done before and although it sounds lame, it's not much different from a "sports' exhaust that doesn't add any performance. But the reality is that glorious engine sounds from the past are a dying breed.
I think that 3 or 5 cylinders sound quite characterful.

3s no - remember the Daihatsu Charade or VW Polo? I once had a 5-cylinder Alfa Romeo 156 and it sounded lovely.
