I think there's already a reaction evolving as fewer and fewer young people are learning to drive.
Whatever the solution - and we've talked round and round the various pros and cons on many occasions now - it has to be in place before current ICE resources run out sometime towards the end of the century.

Interestingly, most small lithium battery packs used in phones, laptops etc end up in the waste bin rather than recycling. But that won't be an option for much larger car batteries and rightly so. It's a new challenge, but plenty of money to be made in car battery recycling and probably a good investment tip!
