I remember being really disappointed when Jaguar brought out a diesel (!!!) and when Porsche introduced the Cayenne, I was flabbergasted. How could such prestige manufacturers do such a thing!
However, at the time Porsche were in the financial doldrums (the Boxster saved them from collapse, the Cayenne made them profitable) and enabled them to make beautiful sports cars alongside the high volume products. Slag us off it you will, but accountants see the world through numbers - and the bottom line is important. Witness Saab, who overly complicated the Vectra and spend huge volumes of cash on it instead of reskinning it and getting it out into the showrooms as the Saab 9-6 . At the end of the day, if a company ain't making money, they can't reinvest in development, R&D etc. (Exhibit A, M'Lud, British Leyland). And a lack if investment and R&D leads to that downward spiral of dull products.
So while I'm horrified at Ferrari making a vehicle other than a sports car or grand tourer, I can see why.

Will be interesting to see what the car actually will look like - think we will have to wait a while before that happens. Will it have allround disastrous looks the Bentayga or the first gen Cayenne, will it be blah like the Levante or will it be good with some issues (am thinking that's the Urus for me)...I am going to assume it's not going to perfect as I think that's an impossible task!
