Coincidentally, maybe?... there’s just been a debate on PCGBs FB page - 991-2 v 718. Many, many opinions from enthusiasts, some of whom that have driven both, and some, perhaps, quite surprising. One that is made certainly more than once is that soundtrack aside the 718 is a much superior performer.

Clearly, though, the F6 is a very emotive element and if its good enough for GT4 and Spyder then there’s no good reason why a variant could not be used across the range. Unless, of course, there is?

Alternatively Porsche got it wrong years ago when it planned to drop the 911: is this simply another example?

I suspect the reason will be compliance with group average CO2 emissions ....

The 718S we test drove was vastly superior in every respect to our 987 except one - engine noise. Much as I love the sound of a Scooby I don't want it behind me in my Boxster.

Packaging I thought? Room for a 6 or a turbo but not both?

I seem to recall at the time I bought my 718S a video somewhere from Porsche where the designer stated that the F6 engine would not fit in the engine bay of the 718 model. Even though there has been lots and lots of speculation over whether the GTS would have a 6 in there, it didn't. I'd be in the camp that believes that 911s will be sixes and 718s will be fours. Remember, that the 981 Cayman was seriously encroaching on base 911 performance and the 911 sells for a premium.

Isn't the Cayman GT4 is getting a GT3 derived 400bhp NA flat six? or is that just an interwebs rumour?

Car Magazine (not exactly gospel but interesting):

Andreas Preuninger, head of the Porsche GT models, has gone on record as saying that the GT4 will be naturally aspirated, pointing to a detuned version of the 4.0-litre flat-six found in the new 911 GT3.

Cannot believe that anyone spending that sort of money will be persuaded to purchase a Cayman just because Porsche are giving a £1000 towards the deposit,10% yes but that’ll not happen.

Agree on that. I think it is possibly more likely to be a way of getting more customers who would be ordering anyway to fund through PFS and not alternative providers...like our friends at Clydesdale.
