I’ve just bought Digital Vignettes for the Austrian motorway system and I my interpretation of the available information is that that is now all I need - ie no further toll payments. Please can someone confirm this and also which booth(s) I can use when I get to the barriers? We’ll be picking up the A12 south of Garmish-P and then taking the A13 Brenner across to Italy. Ta!

That's great news, no more having to stop at a petrol station at the border! :)

Indeed, that is all you need to have. Austrians have similar system to the Czech Republic where you pay a flat fee depending on number of days for all motorways, there are no toll booth or separate tolls. There are cameras on gantries reading the stickers, so make sure it's stuck in the right place (or in your case it would just read the number plate as the Digital Vignette is linked to a number plate).

Have a read here, from the horse's mouth: https://www.austria.info/uk/service-fac ... ia-by-road

And the following link, where your probably bought it from: https://www.asfinag.at/toll/vignette/digital-vignette/

Enjoy the trip! :D

There's an additional toll section on the Brenner pass -see here: http://www.tolls.eu/austria

It's annoying because you have to pay an additional €9 (one-way) on top of the Vignette charge - there are additional toll booths like the French system but they accept cash or card. I used it many times when living in Garmisch. It's good news that the 'vignette' part can be done online now.

Thanks Semerka, Guy. This secondary fee is what I suspected but was having difficulty with their info.

It seems that this system is also now digital - numberplate recognition - as with the regular tolls, because they’re saying that there is no facility on the A12 for payment!

Anyway, another €18 down the tubes!

Why aren’t we charging visitors?

I suppose you still have to pay extra for mountain tunnels and passes as they are very expensive to build / maintain?

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road costs some Euro 33 for a day. But that is more of a tourist attraction. Worth it though! 😃

Yup, that’s exactly their rationale.

Just tying up loose ends prior to our trip and note the following...

The application process for the digital vignette requests country of origin as so on my confirmation show my number plate as... GB XX08 XXX. But my number plate is only formatted XX00 XXX - I don’t have the little GB bit.

So does anyone know just what the recognition system reads? Is the GB necessary for it to automatically read the plate successfully? I’ve emailed ASFINAG but haven’t yet heard back. I obviously don’t want to get stuck in the wrong queue with a dozen angry Austrians behind me.

Will you not need those EU number plates with the little blue panel with GB written in it?

That’s exactly what I’m wondering. We leave in a few weeks time so can get OPC to fit new ones - with GB - if necessary. But only if necessary.
